First real build - thoughts? :) - *updated with build log*

Hey OC3D

Let's get right into it!

Current build;
Old acer laptop upgraded with some ram, q6600 and a GT8800, all stock coolers so yeah, time for a new and fresh build after so many years!
(Yep, it's noisy as hell, but hey - PSU still works? From Acer?! Magic!)

NEW BUILD:

  • CPU Core i5-3570K
    CPU COOLER Corsair H60
    RAM Corsair Vengeance 1600MHZ 8GB
    PSU Cooler Master Gx 550W
MOBO MSI Z77A-GD55 (was on sale, so same as the G-45)
    CASE Cooler Master Elite 430
    HDD WD green 1TB
GPU Either MSI 670 or the Asus 670?

As of right now I don't play really demanding games, but I'm tired of running setting on med/low and I want to have to computer for a good 3-4 years.

Any suggestions? What could be done better, cheaper, more awesome?

It shall not be more expensive than it is now, unless there's a really good bang for the buck in the case of an upgrade!

Cheers!

from personal experience don't get the WD Green 1TB u can get prob a seagate 1tb for the same price and it spins at 7200rpm not the weird intellishit

Get a better case, and an air cooler instead of the H60.

Then go for a Silverstone Strider fully modular power supply.

That will be a great gaming rig with that

JR has it right on the CPU cooling and case.. simple CM 212 for
moderate overclocking or NH-D14 or PH-TC14PE for extreme OC.

choice pieces, give a place to stay comfortably for 4-5years.
the case is "inexpensive" and you get what you pay for. not a rip on
the case, but again choice parts slipped into a skimped case. no cable
management, small, compact and no "growth" for later projects (and
there will be).
want some later-proffing, the CM 690II is a great starter case. and
periodic super sales occur often with this case. i prefer the fractal
arc midi for its air and water-cooling support, more so the 690II.

id opt for the MSI 670 power edition matches the scheme of the
GD55.

the choice is your completely, but the 430 is i3/mATX league and
your down-grading your choices...

Forget the H60 and get an air cooler, deano has it spot on. Hyper 212 Evo for moderate OC's, D14 or PH-TC14PE for higher OC's, also the NZXT Havik 140 too for higher OC's.

Change the PSU too, i've never been a fan of Cooler Master PSU's, they're a bit crap tbh. Something like a Be Quiet P10 550W, Corsair HX/AX 650 or Silverstone strider would do nicely.

I'd also change the case too, something like a Fractal Core 3000 would do the job, or a Fractal Arc Midi if you wanna spend a little more. Or maybe a Corsair 300R or 400R.

Also, where's your SSD? If you want one just as a boot drive get a Crucial M4 or Samsung 830 64GB and a WD Caviar Black for your games. Or maybe you wanna put your OS and games on the SSD (which is what i did, and i'd recommend this too), if so get a 256GB Samsung 830 or Crucial M4 and stick to the WD Caviar Green drive

+1 for the SSD, every new rig should have one imo. The new cpu and gpu will give you great gaming performance, but for normal use a ssd gives you the experience because it makes your pc much more responsive

Have you forgot that people usually have budgets that they need to stick to? Do you not think if he had the money for an ax650 (the most expensive brand of psu there is) and a 256gb SSS maybe he would have put them in the op?

A lot of people aren't made of money

It's called a suggestion. And i did NOT say he should get an AX AND a 256GB SSD, i gave him a range of options. And the OP didn't list a budget

told him to change everything and get a more expensive version......

K

No i said i personally would change it. Ok, just for you i will be what you would probably call 'helpful' i suppose:

Some examples products:
Change the case to a Fractal 3000
CPU cooler to an NZXT Havik 140
PSU to a Be Quiet Pure Power L8 CM 530W or similar

Maybe, add a 64GB SSD (Crucial M4 or Samsung 830) (i think all PC's nowadays need an SSD)

Happy now? ^_^

PetrolHead247, he said that he can't make it more expensive unless there's a real bang for the buck. Pretty much everything you said is more expensive...

As for the topic, go for CM 690ii case, it's much better. Replace the H60 with an air cooler. What about Asus GTX 660 Ti? It's considerably cheaper. In turn that will give you the extra money for the CM 690ii you'll need and maybe there's enough left over for an SSD too. Depending on what deals you find of course.

Whenever you shop online check if there are voucher/coupon codes somewhere around too, I saved a few pounds that way on the stuff I've just ordered. Also there are discounts if you get everything from one shop, so maybe that's an option. Shop around.

7950 > 660ti and cheaper too so i'd go for that. Hell, what about a 7850 or 7870? That would save some cash and allow him to get a SSD and better PSU and case. And yeah the CM 690ii is a great case, for some reason i can never remember to mention it in these sorts of threads

It's not so much that I don't have the money, I'm just a cheap a**hole and if you don't put a line in the sand you'll end up with a 690 1200W PSU build before you know it ;D

Anyhow, thanks for the good feedback.

Changed case to CM 690 2 basic
Changed Cooler to CM 212 Evo
Changed PSU to Corsair HX 650W
Changed HDD to Seagate Barracuda 1TB

I already have an SSD in my laptop and I'm well aware of the bonuses and I will never get another laptop without it. But again, on this machine I will only be using it for gaming, so I don't really care if it takes a second longer or two in order to start up and launch the game ;>

Pleased with the rig now? and do you guys have any advice for building? ;)

I chose to go with a MSI 660TI instead, it's around 100£ cheaper and the price difference scales very well in regards of performance compared to a gtx 670 - Also it's a bit cheaper to SLI in the future.

Will be updating you when it has been build, parts has been ordered, but the CPU cooler is out of stock for a few days ;/ ;/

good luck with the build.. snap some pix and use the build log to show
the members progress in your build.
