First Build: Advice Would be Much Appreciated!

Concerning two 460s vs. a single 570. If they are comparable? Yes and no. In benchmarks they may be somewhat similar, BUT you will have two graphics in your system, which brings up several problems. One of them is airflow and temps as you said already. The other one is SLI, it works great in Benchmarks, but in real situation a single card will save you a lot of trouble. SLI and Crossfire are known to be a real pain in some situations. And since you were talking about future-proofing your system I would ditch that SLI 460 idea and throw in a single 570, because it offers so much more and the same/lower price.

Are you essentially saying that in an ideal situation, SLI would give you that much more of a performance boost, but in the real world, it just complicates things and provides for another thing to go wrong. I would see a difference in benchmarking, but in real life applications, the difference, if any, would be outweighed by the disadvantages? I believe in my pricing, the SLI configuration would substantially be more expensive than the single GTX 570. Thanks!

How would the Mushkin Enhanced Blackline Frostbyte PC3-12800 12GB 3X4GB DDR3-1600 CL9-9-9-24 Triple Channel Memory kit work with either of the routes I decide to go (Either the 980X or the i7 950)

The thing with SLI is that the computer needs to communicate with two GPUs at the same time instead of 1, which may lead to problems, but the benefit you get of 460 SLI is the ability to run three monitors as opposed to the two offered with just a single 570.

EDIT: Concerning the case, Fractal Design R3? That's the one being used in some of the Christmas Rigs. It should be extremely quite since it's covered head to toe in sound damping material.

I was thinking of selecting the Fractal Design R3, but after reading that the acoustic foam eventually becomes lose when heated, I decided against it. Nice case, though. I've selected Antec's P183. Similar to the Fractal Design R3, but I believe more reliable.

So if your not planning to overclock, and since you live in Canada, which I assume is fairly cold, a stock cooler for the CPU is more than enough. Getting the Corsair Vengeance RAM is also a good idea, since you save money on getting 12gbs of ram, and you can increase it to 24gbs if needed.

EDIT: Performance wise I would think the 570 comes out ahead against the 460 SLI by a whisker

EDIT: The "green" hard drives aren't as fast as the "black" line, but they should be quieter and since it's storage speed shouldn't be too big of an issue, but that's just me.

Canada, more specifically the city I am from, has days where it is 104.9 degrees Fahrenheit. The i7 950, from what I understand, gets fairly warm because of its 45nm architecture. Moreover, I may be doing some moderate over-clocking: 3.33GHz at maximum. The over-clocking would only be done in order to have identical performance as the i7 980x with most single threaded applications.

I do not know how money is saved by selecting the Corsair Vengeance memory. Are you reasoning that it would be money saved in the long run by having three sticks because you would only need to add more three sticks to maximize the memory capacity of the motherboard?

I apologize for not understanding your 'whisker' expression. Basically what you are trying to say is the GTX 570 would not be significantly greater in performance in comparison to the dual SLI GTX 460s. Am I correct? I am leaning towards the GTX 460, though, because I believe it will be more than sufficient for my needs. Would anyone offer their input on this card for essentially a bit of gaming (Crysis at decent settings), Mathematica, Maple, Autocad, and Blu ray playback?

My storage drive will be used for audio files and speed, as far I know, is important for seek times and such. (I don't know how to explain it)
