Far Cry 2 overheats my 9800GX2

My XfX 9800GX2 Black Edition gets so hot that it crashes whole system forcing me to restart...

I use Riva Tuner and i force fan speed to 100%= ~3200rpm, but temperature keeps climbing until it gets at 103c and then my system crashes.

Idle temp in Windows = 70c and the maximum i got was 103c= sys.crash.

I use 181.22 drivers in windows Vista x86.

4Gb ddr2

Q6600 @ 3,2GHz

750W Corsair PSU

and LOTS of airflow in my Chasis

I really dont know what is the issue... anyone please?

I am so desperate... Please help!!! :worship:

Do you have a build up of dust within your rig? Check the fan on your GX2 and if it does have a large build up of dust then that's the cause. You can remove it with a can of compressed air. Try to get between the fan blades so it blows out dust build up on the heatsink too.

I used Dyson Vacum cleaner which could suck soul out of me if i put it against my ear !

there is no particle of dust in there... that must be something else.... Thx for a good reply tough.

BTW. I use 22" 1600x1050 if it is any help...

Are you sure it's the card crashing? Far Cry 2 has a memory leak issue that means it always falls over after about an hours play. I've got 2GB of RAM and it takes about 45 mins. My brothers 8800GT SLI system has 4GB of RAM and it takes maybe an hour and a half.

But it always falls over eventually.

Not that I'm suggesting 103c is a sensible temperature.

Nah... that is not the issue... "unfortunetly".

My whole system crashes EVERY time temp riches 103c´so that must be IT.

I just splited my Graphcard to pieces and assambled it again just to be 110% sure thater weren't any dust blocks and stuff... gonna try it again...

BTW. I think 70c-72c IDLE in windóws is ALOT...

I played far cry 2 for over 6 hours many times (boredom) and never crashed.

Have you ever disassembled the card before this happened?

If you have then you may have ruined something cooler related.

YES ! Jesus Christ and his mother Holly Marry ! I know... ok .. for Some Unknow reason after i splitted my Card to small pieces and assambled again, i get maximum of 88c which is 15c below the temp before! That is one of the small mysteries of this universe... i guess i screwed it better back together then the XfX did :P

Well.. for now problem is solved i guess... but i will update thread if anything changes...

BTW. IDLE is still 72c

Watch the language mate :/

What thermal paste did you use on the core contact surface? Should make some serious difference in temps.

Excuse me, but regart what part of what i sayed should i watch my language?

Jesus Christ... etc ? that is not a curse as far as i'm concerned :)

I didnt change thermal paste... i left it untouched as it was... if my graphic card burns down from overheating i get it repaired on guarantee, but if i change thermal paste they wont take it :nono:

Yeah, I personally found the Jesus Christ part quite offensive.

When the card is RMA'd xfx probably will not perform a nuclear examination of the thermal paste. If you ever have issues with the card I'd replace the thermal paste with some MX-2 or AS5 (costs you €5) which will probably seriously improve the temperatures. You might also want to clean the surface with ArtiClean or a similar household product before applying the MX-2.

OK guys forget the "Jesus Christ" topic now.

I would also go for the thermal paste as well.

And if you're bothered, go get a 3rd party cooler.

I can't name any as I haven't had experience yet.

You guys know any good coolers?

I acctually have some MX-2 from assambly of my friends new i7 cough**a$$hole**cough ;) so i am gonna try tommorow and see how it turns out... but for now my temps has droped 15c for a reason i do not understand so i am happy :) ...for now.

Was already dropping the language topic ;)

I do not think there are a lot of aftermarket coolers for the 9800gx2. Since the card has a sandwich design, aircoolers are nearly impossible. Iirc your only bet is watercooling, which is a lot more expensive than aircooling.

Oh yeah! This is the dual GPU version. Acted stupid and thought it was the GTX version lol.

Oh well. I'm out of ideas.

OK BOYSA AND ... BOYS i guess !! ARE YOU READY FOR THIS ?!?!?!

I got up this mourning and splitted my Card to pieces and applyed MX-2 thermal paste... well let me put it this way...I tested it with Far Cry 2: Anti aliasing 4x; Ultra high and 1600x1050

IDLE:60~62c

LOAD: 80~85c

THIS IS INSANE!!!! The MX-2 do does miracles !

Haha told ya :)

Stock thermal pasts isn't all that good and paste doesn't like to be reapplied either. Enjoy your as new ass kicking card :)
