External storage for steam account

Hi guys,

Just want anyone's opinion, on an external storage solution for steam account.

I was thinking of going with a seagate 3TB backup plus and thunderbolt adapter. Will this be the best solution for what I want? Anyone got another suggestion please?

Thanks heaps
Bacchus :)

As in, to install games to that drive?
I wouldn't recommend external at all.

However, you could use the back and restore feature on steam to quickly just reinstall the games, and then keep every installed game on the internal drive.

Is it on a desktop? Or even laptop...can you not add a second internal hard drive?

Thanks for the reply. It's on a laptop - I've got a 256SSD and 750GB SSHybrid
Both are almost full. So external it has to be I'm afraid, unless I win the corsair Christmas Compo ;). Thunderbolt is what I thought would the best way to go. Do you have any other external suggestions? All help/advise would be much appreciated.

Cheers :)

How are they installed? Does your laptop have 2 HDD bays, or do you have one in an optical bay?
Could always swap the 750gb one for something like a 2TB internal HDD?

Do you really have a TB worth of games?
A thunderbolt drive would probably be the best / fastest option, although even a USB3 drive can get good results.
I'm not sure how well the games would run off an external drive though, if windows even allows that(?)

My laptop has two bays, both taken up - 1xssd, 1xsshybrid. I have an external 1TB for my music vids, songs and other random stuff but its only USB2.0.

Yes I have a lot of games maybe not a whole TB but close to it. Windows will let steam run off an external drive with the games installed on it (external).

Thanks for your help I think I've made up my mind.... I will get what I was thinking unless I find something else in the mean time.

Again thank you

ive seen where peeps run there externals (USB 3.0) for steam gaming. seems a
viable solution for portableness. and if you don't have your PC, you can use any
PC by hooking up external, log onto site and setup on "new" PC with external
plugged in.

Yeah it should work fine if it's usb 3.0. I have a 500GB HDD dedicated to games(sadly it's filled up) and I've transferred it to different computers with no problems. When you try to run the game for the first time on a different computer you'll need to go through the first time set up for every game again but it's not that bad. If you just have it connected to one computer it'll be the same as if it was your main drive.

I have Steam + all my games installed on an external USB3 drive and it works perfectly.

I haven't tried it yet but as far as I know when you plug the drive in another computer you need to approve it with a code you get in your mail and that should be it because Steam is also on the external drive.

The only thing you need to watch out for are games that do not save in the cloud cause those save games will be in you documents folder.

Here's how you do it:
