Following a recent Cyber attack which has compromised one of their databases, the auction site Ebay urges their users to change their passwords.

Ebay said that the database contained encrypted passwords and other non-financial information and says that it had no evidence that there there was any unauthorized activity on its users' accounts.

Despite the fact that Ebay also owns PayPal, they said that that division's data is separate and was stored at a different location, encrypted and that there was no evidence that it had been accessed.

However, they said that changing the passwords was "best practice and will help enhance security for eBay users".

I know a lot of the guys here use this site frequently, with most of my rig being comprised of parts from this particular site personally I feel this must be shared to all you guys. Especially given the numbers AMD R9 series GPUs being bought and sold after the mining craze has ended.

As always personal security on the internet should be a priority for those who spend money on it, so I recommend you guys act on this now to eliminate any chance of any funny business on your account.

Looks like the BBC updated their source article, it now gives a few tips for changing your password as well as some more info on the hack.

Although Ebay also owns PayPal, they said that that division's data is separate and was stored at a different location, encrypted and that there was no evidence that it had been accessed. So thankfully we shouldn't be losing any money out of this.

Ugh, imagine if they hacked paypal. A terrifying prospect to say the least.

Thank god for that, have you tried changing your paypal password? It's a nightmare now.

Thanks for the info, all changed here. :)

Not yet, i went on the site and it was very slow. I'm going to change it later anyway, regardless fo what they say, as a student I have little enough money as it is lol.

I kind of trust you and perceive you as a trustworthy person. But I recommend against posting a link to a site that is supposed to change the password for an account which is linked to financial information.
It could be misinterpreted as a phishing attempt, even if it is the real deal.

You raise a good point, I will amend my post. I wouldn't like my words or intent to be misinterpreted.

But this is BBC!

Only took them 2-3 months to let everyone know, I have always changed mine every 6-9 months anyway as it stops the wife from using it all the time lol
