e8400 or e8500 or e8600 ??

Indeed. In all fairness to quad cpus, and there are great ones out there, unless u do something slightly professional, even media conversion on a regular basis (if ur not using cuda), u'll hardly utilize it outside of benching.

If ur a gamemeister, in the current climate a dual is more than enough.

Haven't heard of Dx11 or Win7 bringing any core releasing apis or anything, so u still got a situation where although all ur cores will be used by the OS a max of (100 / number of cores) % will ever be used.

Nix or Mac people would beg to differ.

he was pushing me towards the q9450 on overclockers saying it will get 4ghz no problem. but i slightly doubt the no problem part. only real gain i can see from getting that over a e8xxx is the 12mb cache

I got one of those. It does oc great.

I've not tried to kill it at any stage, but I do recall making it go 3.6 with about 4 changes to a Gigabyte bios. (did some work, then kinda turned it off)

4g ? probably. 24/7 - probably not. Unless u got some great cooling going on.

Thing is, it is a tremendous working cpu with it's cache etc. But it is an excessive cpu.

If u game 99% of the time, sure it'll do a fantastic job.... with 1 of it's cores doing the work. (or all 4 working at 25% max)

I will have an E6750 for sale soon, well, i have it here now, but i havent posted it on here. Just to put it out there kind of thing...Good clocking chips, will do about 3.8 nicely on the right board, everything you need...

mhmm kinda tempting... ill have a think about it and look around whats the vid on it? and have you oc it yet (looking to get 4+ ghz 24/7)

hopefuly i can get this message in before my net drops gain:

decided im going with a e8600 from tom, now to save up to give it some water loving

I say that you should get the E8500.

The E8400 won't clock hugely high, and the E8600 is too expensive, I think the E8500 is the happy medium.

Personally, I'll only buy a CPU used. At least then I know I won't get something that can't overclock for crap, or runs stupidly hot, as some CPU batches do.

im having toms e8600 off him soon as the money clears from my paypal, should have posted ive already come to a decision.
