Hey guys

I usually use Ubuntu to rip my dvds and such to my computer for quick easy viewing but 9.10 seems to be a bit tempermental

So I need a Windows solution, probably not free, but a good program - My laptop also has a bluray drive, so if im not getting an open source solution, i may as well get a program capable of blu ray rips too.

Any ideas? Tried slysoft anydvd hd but theres no way im paying for a program that doesnt even let me choose settings etc...

Well it's a bit of a dodgy issue really. AFAIK there have been no recent good programs to rip DVDs. The one that comes to mind is DVD decrypter, but I think the last offical update was 2004 or something crazy, and it's a little hard to get hold of. The problem is in the UK, I think it's legal to have a backup of your DVDs, but not legal to circumvent the copy protection....(might need confirmation on that). AnyDVD should be able to get rid of the protection, so you're OK on that front.

The website lifehacker.com did a feature not too long ago on the best DVD ripping tools IIRC. Might be worth checking out.

I use to use dvdshrink http://www.dvdshrink.org/ a couple years back and it worked fine back then for copying dvds to your hdd. For the blu ray use AnyDvd HD its a slysoft program so its not freeware but I have used it a couple of times and it works well.

Why would you want to rip a blu-ray? Surely you'll run out of disk space very quickly if you're putting those on your drive?

The laws say you can back up you software but it must be a "perfect" back up. that includes the copy protection (wich isnt possable). So as the law stands legaly (here in the UK) you cannot rip any media with proection unless you have the original master and a dvd press.

But saying that you can buy the blue ray version / DVD version now that have Blue ray, DVD and a Digital copy abit the digital copy is normaly rubbish and allso can only be used on 1 device as you only get 1 keycode.

e.g -> this is the sticker on the blue ray versions.

Free stuff.

FormatFactory - cpu dependant - does anything.

MediaCoder - cpu or cuda dependant - does anything.
