dvd drive not spinning

Ok i having a problem with my tsstcorp DVD+-RW TS-L632D ATA.. Up until yesterday everything was fine, but now whenever i insert a disk the drive tries to spin the disk for about a quarter of a second and then stops. The device manager says that the drive is working fine, but i cant open any type of disc. Any help would be appreciated and thanks in advance

PS im running Vista... if that changes anything

Almost guarantee u it`ll work in another pc.

Seen this b4.

If my suspicions are correct, try using it in Dos or Safemode, or both. Do check how/if ur mobo posts info about it.

what do you mean what does my mobo say?

it says the device is working properly

when I put a disc in and run it it says "please insert a disk"

When the pc is poweredup or reset sometimes, it displays and checks-off components that are plugged into it b4 Windows gets a chance to start. This is called the POST (power on self test).

(However, some mobos allow u to disable the display of this in an effort to speed up booting.)

Got an easier suggestion, try booting to a cd (that`s bootable obviously) - like ur Windows CD or something. Don`t go through the install process, just check if it works.

Great idea, that way you'll find out if its your computer or just the drive itself.

I tried booting from my windows vista installation cd and nothing... i checked the cd on another pc and it boots fine so i guess its a problem with my cd/dvd drive

Sounds like it. Basic of basic uses for the optical is in a dos mode, which booting is the precursor to.

If it can`t handle that, there`s a problem.

U could always try the unit in another pc incase there`s some stoopid mobo related reason - long shot.

Be fair tho, these units are dirt cheap.
