(I thought I'd start a new thread on this, because it's a new/different problem - can somebody close my other thread, or let me know how to close it?)
It happens on the fifth or sixth disc I insert - DVD, BR, all formats.
I put the disc in, My Computer comes up with the correct disc info, and the disc works fine. Then, after I remove the disc from the drive, My Computer "remembers" the disc - the contents window stays open, and My Computer shows the ejected disc's info - for a long time; to get the empty drive icon back I have to eject the drive via Windows, or wait. The next disc I insert takes a long time to load - if they load at all (sometimes I have to refresh My Computer to make it load) - My Computer can get the disc size wrong, and the "retention" happens again.
Any ideas what could be going on here? The only change I've made is a SATA/AHCI driver update a few days ago. I don't think it's the BD-R drive itself that's at fault, because that wouldn't explain the Windows "retention" of ejected discs. I've tried a registry fix to do with "Upper Filter" and "Lower Filter", but to no avail.

EDIT - OK, that was scary: my storage hard drive disappeared from My Computer. Shut down, moved it to a different SATA port, restart, and it's back. I think something's not right with my board, here, or my new drivers are caput... I really don't want to have to re-format, as my PC is running OEM W7 and I can't carry the licence over to a fresh install!
EDIT2 -
Actually, I just remembered some other stuff:
a) a few days ago, after the BIOS splash the computer failed to boot, instead saying "insert boot device and press any button to continue", or something to that effect,
b) my HDD seq read rate has dropped from 170+ to 110-120, even after defrags.
Since the SATA/AHCI drivers don't work at the BIOS level, does this mean probably f**ked SATA controller? I've got my eye on a Z77 board on eBay, and a chipest change would mean a driver change along with it, which would fix a chipset issue and/or a driver issue...
