hey OC3D

so i am currently in the process of building a new rig. and i judt want to be 100% sure all the things fit together and that everything should be of a good quality.

let go on with what i was thinking of buying:

Cpu:

Intel i7 980x (extreme edition)

Cpu cooler:

NH-D14

Motherboard:

ASUS Rampage III Extreme

Case:

Cooler Master HAF X

Graphics card:

ZOTAC GTX480 AMP edition W/O Deathadder

maybe adding an extra later, enough power?

RAM:

6gb (3*2 gb)Corsair Dominator GT DDR3 1600MHz Cl7 pc3-12800

and then maybe later an extra set to reach 12GB, or is that overkill?

PSU:

Cooler Master Silent Pro Gold

Corsair AX1200

which?

Extra fans:

Cooler Master MegaFlow 200 *3 (for the extra top fan and to change the two non LED, 200mm fans)

Cooler Master excalibur (for the VGA duct)

OS:

Windows 7 64 bit Home Premium

Hard Drive:

my old ones:

Western digital 1TB GreenPower

300GB MAXTOR

NEW:

Crucial C300 128GB (for os and couple of games)

will it be useless to get this because of its sata 6, or should a get a cheaper SSD?

please tell me what you think, and what could be improved. and in worst case, what doesnt fit together.

Wow. That's one hell of a fast rig!

With a 1200 watt power supply I think you'll have enough power.

I'd pick the Corsair over the Cooler Master one. :)

i would add 2 1gb 460's over a single 480 imo

can you explain why? i've been thinking of some SLI too, but i just went back to the single GTX 480, and then maybe adding another later.

and which 460's? which brand and edition (if multiple)

I agree with Killa - get the Corsair PSU deffo.

If you're thinking of SLi'ing 480's at some point, obviously it makes sense to buy one now irrespective of the 460's performance. But compared to a single 480 if that was all you were ever gonna buy, 2 x 1GB 460's in SLi look like a winner if current tests are anything to go by. And it would actually save money in that scenario as well!

yeah but the 480's are really nice, except for the noise and powerconsumption (not really my biggest worry). but my current plan is to get a second 480 later.

on a second note, if the ASUS mars II comes out (or another dual 480 GPU) i can sli that with a regular 480 and it would perform as a triple SLI right? or am i getting something wrong?

on a third note ;D is the ZOTAC AMP! much better than a standard cooler, when you remember i am using the HAF X which has the perks for nvidia cards, when im using the VGA Duct?

If you're gonna get a 2nd 480 at some stage, just get a 480 now rather than anything else, it'll save you money that way.

I don't think you can do that. SLi requires not just same series but same model as well if I'm right. ATi crossfire doesn't on the other hand so you can crossfire a 5850 with a 5770, but Nvidia only allow you to use different cards when the lower one is set as a dedicated PhysX card I think. (Someone please correct me if I'm wrong)

The Zotac AMP! Does a good job of taming the heat issues of the 480 with just aircooling but remember it becomes a triple slot card with the custom cooler so it will block more PCI slots than a normal card. The air duct may actually help channel more heat out the case if you're lucky as a custom cooler like that will tend to dump loads of heat back into the case. Also with that particular cooler, watch out for a fault with the black shroud, noticed in the review on this site and also Custom PC magazine, so it's clearly not just a one off!

well yes if your going to SLI 480's eventualy then yes get a 480 as you will b 50% there lol.

not heard anything on that zotac cooler so i can not comment, but instead of getting a mars 2 i would splash pit on watercooling them,as that would help bigtime

i jsut watched a thing online about the amp edition of the 480 it looks like a good cooler from the temps the guy was gettin was something like a 34 degree difference ambient and load temps in extreme burn on furmark

pm me if you want the link to have a watch of the vid

Corsair PSU deffo atm, we have tested a Pro Gold.... but it was...... not brillaint. Might have been a duff though and we have got a couple more now to test.

As it stands atm Corsair wins hands down.

anyone who can tell me if it is worth buying a SATA 6 SSD or does the speed run somewhat similar to any other?

and how about fitting the ram and the NH-D14, is there gonna be any problems?

I'm not massively familiar with HDD's/SSD's so I can't comment there. However, I do know that the NH-D14 does protrude significantly over the ram slots so you can't fit a ram cooler if you wanted to, and in the case of GT you'd have to remove the red heatsink in the two DIMM slots nearest to the CPU socket. For a visual representation, King TTL the 1st shows it in his Rampage III Gene Video Review here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n--elNxqhuk&videos=UDJgRNaVSIU :D

yeah the nh-d14 is massive it covers 4 out of the 6 ram slots on my mobo

but as long as the rams standard sized then you wont have a problem

If you're running them at just the listed 1600MHz I'd have thought it would be fine, most ram at that speed have much smaller heat sinks.

but again, anyone who can answer me if the crucial c300 is better than other because of the sata6 or is it possible to get better/faster SSD's cheaper? Preferable TRIM-supporting BTW we are talking 128GB drives

As for SSD's I can tell you the Intel X25-M 160GB is one of the best performing one's out there.

It's a bit more expensive I think but you do get a bit more space aswell.

Thats completely wrong. Get a Corsair F120 or a OCZ Vertex 2.

does the vertex 2 support TRIM?

and looking at the f120 vs the c300 i see the f120 got som much higer write speeds, but the read speeds are significantly lower. which i would guess was because of the sata3 vs 6. but well its a little cheaper and i bet it is a good buy, maybe thats what i will go for ;D

there is a review of the c300 on this site fell, that should tell you what to expect.

that SSD is very good tho mind, and it does support TRIM if not then it will support some kind of garbage collection but i am pritty shure it does.

the vetex 2 deffo does
