Just curious how many people here run a server at there house for files, music, etc.? Also, did you build is specifically or is it just an old machine?

I used to have 3 servers in my living room - Mail, Web & DNS. They all kinda got merged into one server which is now colocated in London and hosting parts of OC3D ;)

Oh nice, guess I may as well say what I have, I have an old 800MHz T-Bird, that kinda does everything, it runs gentoo.

Well past, present and future is all different here as well.

I used to have a Quad Xeon server in my room which I used for F@H and hosting CSS servers + the USA SX email exchange back in the day.

Currently I'm using my 3ghz P4 Dell which I just slapped another gig of RAM in not long ago as my server. It works out fairly well. It runs fab with both Nix and 2k3, currently running 2k3.

old Athlon XP system, 512 ram, onboard graphics, stuck a 200Gb hard drive in there, that has everything on it

Tis an idea ive played around with but id need at leat 1TB of storage if i were to build one:rolleyes:

I fail to see the problem jk, believe it or not mine had 5 hard drives in it totaling about 120 gigs, just recently put 2 320 gigs in. :D

I`m gathering bits as we speak to build another home-pc-server. Llwyd was stripping down a mobo with a nice handful of raid connections etc to sell so I can shuffle meh stuff about and make a pc for some1 else.. think he may be lost in the christmas shopping crowd tho >.< lol

Old pc used as a storage base is great as u can mess about with u`r gaming/work pc to u`r hearts content, safe in the knowledge that as soon as u`ve installed the OS, all the previous files are readily available.

I`d like to get more into active directory things and deployment, so I can have a simple build OS cd for install and dispatch installs as required. Keep it up to date and so on, to save messing about.

Yepp turned our old Pentium 4 630 HT with 1gb ddr2 ram into a triple OS server with XP redhat and 2000 server yupppp
