Did the update kill the card?

Hi,

I had 1 480 running and installed the new driver. Later I installed the 9800GT, went to device manager and checked for a new driver for the 9800GT. It started updating and some minutes later the PC froze. I left it for a few minutes, the mouse and keyboard were frozen and Ctrl+Alt+Delete wasn't working. I reset the PC and it hung after windows is starting screen. Since I've tried NVIDIA's website for the driver and the older driver. I tried the 9800GT alone and this is what some boot screens looked like:

My bro had a 8800 and that produced similar problems and soon after it died.

My 9800GT has warranty and the seller is helping.

Did the update kill the card?

Thanks

reset the CMOS,you realy shouldent mess with things when they are updating fella.

if u get into windows do a driversweep fellla

A driver can't effect the BIOS screen like that. You didn't do anything like flash the card's BIOS, did you? Can you get into Windows?

Yes it'll go to desktop then soon BSOD.

I haven't touched BIOS.

I don't see a jumper on the card, has it CMOS? where? I reset the motherbaord BIOS.

Nvidia driver has a driver sweep built in, i used it.

During the update the PC froze, restart was the safest option i think because I've seen similar problems with Windows Update stuff and the PC hung/froze for very long time, I don't think it was capable of thinking.

When I got it first I didn't run it on its own. I put staright to PhysX. I'll test the next one

Thx

use phyxion driversweeper not the inbuilt one.

does the mobo have EZFLASH? if it does dl the bios then stick it on a pendrive then boot into ezflash from the bios.

also there must be a battery a round one, take that out for 10sec then boot as norm

Thx I'll try n sort it.

I'll look into EZFLASH. The board has a BIOS reset button. Its a ROG board. I read resetting CMOS is the BIOS reset, is that all it does? I know the battery

I've had the card running properly before, on the older driver, and that was for only PhysX. I didn't test the card alone till this problem

EDIT: The retailer doesn't approve altering the BIOS. XFX could refuse the card. To the Post Office it'll go.

Thx for helping, brave missioners

The BIOS screen had arftifacts when running the 9800GT only. Having it as a secondary caused the hanging on start-up and no artifacts on the BIOS/BOOT menu

i mean flashing the bios od the mobo not the card.

ok if it has button saying the bios reset then press that, its the same job

OK. I installed the latest BIOS soon before christmas, it's OK, seems so. If there is a problem with the next card I'll look at re-installing the motherboards BIOS.

The new 9800GT and GTX 480 driver has the same name: 266.58

The driver description writes: This driver package supports GeForce 6, 7, 8, 9, 100, 200, 300, 400, and 500-series desktop GPUs as well as ION desktop GPUs.

I understand that means both cards use the same driver. I had that driver installed before i ran driver update in 9800 GT device manager.
