hi guys

im probably sounding stupid here but after watching toms review im still a tad confused. ive got an i3 2100 at the moment and was planning on a 2500k but im undecided whether to get a 2500k or a 3570k

any advice? i only really play games but want to try overclocking. any advice would be nice

Well what motherboard have you got? I think if you can pick up a 2500k for a good price then you should be able to overclock it higher than a 3570k as long as the chip is good.

like tom said if you only game and really dont do much else get the 2500k because its probably cheaper and yields better over clock results, only thing i see going for ivy atm is lower power consumption and the memory controller.

i will stick with my 2500k until next tock i guess dont see much need to upgrade after his review

depends on your mobo, if its good enough for 2500k then go ahead, but if you need anew mobo then might aswell grab a z77 and ivybridge, simple really.

or you can always go with amd

Personally, i'd go with a 2500K just because there's no noticeable performance gains with IB (apart from higher memory clocks) and because Aria are selling 2500K's for £144 which is awesome

a few friends of mine have got 8 core bulldozers and my i3 beats them in games with the same gpu which i find hysterical to see there faces

come on that cant be right, in most benches the 8120 overclocked matches the 2600k

i dont mean walk all over it but like keeping up with it. at 1080 im pretty sure the cpu doesnt make much difference

btw they were running at stock aswell, to lazy to overclock -.-

The 2500k is a great price for the performance, besides Ivy bridge doesn't look to be that different and if your looking for whats best for the money, I have to say that the 2500k has defiantly proven itself!

I know I keep banging on about this, but if you aren't going to xf/sli 2x pcie3 cards then there is no benefit to grabbing a pcie3 (ie z77) board and IB cpu unless you were needing to upgrade anyway.

As for the amd BD vs 2100 issue, both cpus are more than enough for modern games. In fact a phenom x4 at stock is just enough to maintain like a minimum score of 30 fps in games. You are comparing rigs that have the same gpu... so they get the same results because both rigs are bottlenecked by the same gpu. If you tried running the games on the lowest possible settings and resolutions then you would see the cpu performance and the BD would win.

I am so jealous of that £144 price for a 2500k, I also have an i3 2100 and have been thinking of upgrading for to a 2500k, but I can't find any good deals in my location.

On a side note I only have an amd 5770 right now. Would you guys think that it would be better to upgrade graphics before processor? The highest I would pay for a graphics card is $250 (£190).

The only really intensive thing I do is play games but I am not overly conserned with playing at the highest settings, but it would be nice. I also do some folding for the team here.

Yea I would suggest you get a gpu before cpu. You might be able to get a 7850 for that budget which would be my choice.

if you want to learn overclocking try it on your 2100, you don't need a fully unlocked CPU to overclock, and you will learn more overclocking locked CPUs, and spend that money on graphics cards or SSDs

the i3 is completely lock down. only thing i can change is the baseclock. wish i could overclock it old school though :/

i got a fully locked pentium D from when Intel didn't even approve of overclocking, but it's 3.4GHz stock clock doesn't stop me from hitting 4.255GHz!

I guess it's because of people like me, Intel locked down your chip, Sorry
