DDR3 compatability question

Hello,

I read another thread in the memory section suggesting that my processor doesn't run 2000Mhz memory properly/safely

This is more than a compatability question.

17/01/2011_NOTE: I've recently found the memory isn't properly compatable with my current board.

I have 8Gb of this RAM: http: http://www.crucial.com/uk/store/partspecs.aspx?IMODULE=BL2KIT25664BN1337

Its running on this board: http://uk.asus.com/product.aspx?P_ID=0ODEkxv4cmlXkqmr&templete=2

Before this board I built my i5 750 in a h55 chipset board that'd run a max of 1333mhz without overclocking.

I want faster. Is it worth doing? I overclock the CPU. I know the memory is overclocked with it. The board has a 'Mem OK' function, I will research wat irt does.

Memory usage on my rig for my games is around 45%, monitored on Logitech's G13.

On my Core 2 build I used 4Gb 1066mhz with 2Gb 500Mhz(it is around 500Mhz

). I think the motherboard didn't process at 1066Mhz, still it worked.

Can I get 4Gb very high spec RAM and use it with 4Gb of that memory I'm using now? If yes, should I use the Mem OK function. Explain what it'll do please.

If no I'm still interested in upgrading

This is what the board will do:

Dual-Channel, DDR3 2133(O.C.) MHz

The motherboard supports DDR3 memory that features data transfer rates of 2133(O.C.)/2000(O.C.)/1800(O.C.)/1600/1333/1066 MHz

Please suggest a 2x2GB memory package. nothing over £200, around £110 is more welcome

I've looked at the market. The latency first 3 numbers being lower aren't making some RAM by the same manufacturer more expensive. The fourth number does make some more expensive with the first 3 being higher numbers. erm. So, I dunno wat God wants me to have

help!

I'll phone Crucial this week.

Will this work with the board? 2133Mhz not overclocked: http://www.crucial.com/uk/store/partspecs.aspx?IMODULE=BL2CP25664FN2139CEU

I consider this as I think it has lower latency than the next option being overclocked to 2133Mhz

This 1600Mhz and it will be overclocked: http://www.crucial.com/uk/store/partspecs.aspx?IMODULE=BL2KIT25664FN1608

and the mushkin. we will be considering mushkin, o yes

Thanks for looking and the help

When you chuck different RAM sitcks on what will happen the Motherboard should automatically reduce the speed of faster ram and change the latency timings until they are same, if the RAM doesn't work properly at the reduced speed and modified timings the system won't boot. At least that's what I think happens.

So if you get your high spec RAM it's gonna be reduced to the performance of your slower RAM, but it should work.

EDIT: With Mem OK, you put in the new sticks if it doesn't work press Mem OK and it should tune the RAM so that it does boot. It's designed to fix issues caused by RAM incompatibility.

EDIT: Also for the RAM you want to buy, why not the Mushkin Ridgebacks from ARIA? you can get 2000MHz at 7-10-8-27 timings and they are being sold at 108 quid or Redline Ridgebacks 1600MHz 6-8-6-24 at under 95 quid.

Thanks Zeals.

I found the stuff on Aria.

ok i aint gonna mix the memory because it underclocks the faster stuff

I'm unsure what'll happen using faster than 1600Mhz RAM. The board support faster RAM when overclocked and I guess 2000Mhz RAM will be throttled to 1600Mhz until something is overclocked. What the ideas for this?

This stuff is good for price: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-201-OC&groupid=701&catid=8&subcat=1517

I read 2x4Gb modules is recommended over 4x2Gb

How will standard 2133Mhz memory work? the BIOS has a memory tuner. Can i OC the processor then set the memory to 2133Mhz?

I'd much rather get something like the Redline/Radioactive or something like that from Mushkin and sell this. A six gig tripple channel kit would give you a substantial performance boost even though it's smaller in size. It's not like you'll use all the 6gig anyway. You do 3D modelling?

I want the memory for my p55 dual channel board. 4/8 Gig. Yes, maby I'll do more 3D modelling. It was years ago I did some on a Pentium 3 and a Core 2 build.

I dunno wat'll suit me best and wat speed because wil stock 2133Mhz stuff work at 2133Mhz when I OC?

wat are the options? does the i5 750 run with high frequencys? wat'll happen if i install 2133Mhz sticks then OC the CPU?

I looked a mem perfect at the BIOS and it goes up to 2200Mhz. I ran it to make my mem 1600Mhz, it said it could take 2-3 minutes. the computer turned off then on and off loads of times, red led's for cpu and mem monitoring flashing and i got fed up with that and hit the BIOS reset button when the computer switched off, it stopped. With my CPU OC at 3.7 the memory is at 1550Mhz ish. CPU-Z says the latency is 9-9-9 wen at stock, OC'd and underclocked. The sticker on the memory stick says 7-7-7

I found this on a different forum:

It says on the Asus site that it supports up to DDR3-2133 through overclocking, so you'll just have to change the FSBRAM ratio and you'll get your speed.

any reason you want that fast a memory? it might make the computer 2-4% faster than ddr3-1600 at most

im tinking i'll keep wat i have. i use it for gaming mostly.

i don't have a warranty with the board, i got it as ex-display. can maxing the RAM OC kill the board?

I phoned Crucial and hardly understood the guy's accent. Didn't get wat i phoned for

advice, opinions are welcome

thanks

i checked the timings in the BIOS and it was 9-9-9 too. i spoke to crucial about it. now i've manualy set the timings to 7-7-7

an explination about this is needed for many i think

Oh you want dual channel! Sorry, matey. I don't think there should be a problem even though I'm not a fan of mismatching ram.
