Current DVD Drives

Is there really that much of a difference in DVD drives at the minute?

The reason I ask is both of my DVD drives are simultaneously dying and are silver drives in a black case (eww :p). I was considering SATA as I have a spare SATA port, (but this could also be used for a vista drive). I haven't seen any benchmarks or performance reviews anywhere so does anyone know if it would be beneficial over an IDE DVD drive.

Also does anyone have a preference for a drive with a reason? I've always preferred LG drives as they seem to perform well but my housemate prefers Lite-On for the Lightscribe (which he's never actually used).

I've already decided that there's no need for two DVD drives as I don't copy DVDs or CDs for backup anymore (why when HDD space is so cheap and fast?). So for a single drive my question is; SATA or not, and why?

You can get LG,samsung dvd rws with lightscribe on now. They are all the same really just with diffrent burning speeds. You can pick up a samsung one for aound £15-20

Yeah I noticed that during my search, but I'd never use it really :p

I was using an LG and a Sony and the LG was the better and quieter of the two, is this still the case?

i dont think theres much difference between any of them really.. personally i use LG, its silent when playing dvd's, and has decnt writing speeds etc. Cost me around £17.

I have a samsung but because i alwyas have music on etc i dont really know about noise. I dont really care how noisey it is as long as it works!

Looks like I might as well go for another LG, does anyone have any comments on SATA over PATA performance or improvements?

Shouldn`t be any difference. Afaik, especially in the sub £25 area, all the mechanisms work @ ATA66 @ best.

U can spend extra monies on larger cache drives, some of the br ones come under that category.

None of the extra expense is worth it tho imo. Unless ur job it burning stuff.
