Crysis 2 just isn't that much fun.

I honestly don't see how this game is getting 90+ on many websites. The game visually is very good, but to me its just like any other shooter. I cannot play this for more than 2 hours at a time because I just get extremely bored with it. I don't know, maybe I am just tired of FPS games. Its extremely linear, and I think that is its biggest problem. You can use vehicles but its pointless because you can't go very far anyways. There is a small number of weapons to choose from, which I guess makes sense, you wouldn't find an AK47 or M1 Garand in the middle of new york, but it just feels like once you play it for a few hours you have seen all of the weapons. Or maybe its just me.

SP is tedious and very basic in the fact its: walk 10 feet, get ambushed, kill enemies, walk another 10 feet, get ambushed etc.

MP is VERY inconsistant, weapons often have different effects - it could take 2 bullets to kill one person and 2 clips to kill another (armour off), spawn points could do with a bit of attention although its not as bad as other FPS' and the official/unofficial server stuff just confuses things (you have sperate rankings for each!)

I haven't tried multiplayer, but that is another thing. Developers can no longer create competent single player campaigns. Very few developers actually do good single player campaigns. Infact, the last time I think I actually enjoyed a good single player campaign in a FPS is half life and perhaps COD 4 (perhaps forgetting a few but you get my point). Yes, I said it. But after that, Its all gone downhill. Everything is a copy of everything else. Crysis 2's story is ok I guess, a bit original in terms of games that are coming out but it is let down by the extremely linear gameplay and predictability of the whole thing. Its like one of those cheesy hollywood action films that are designed to attract teen agers but have absolutely no artistic quality to them what so ever. Just a bunch of explosions and cg effects.

I loved the COD4 campaign, but since then none of the CoD series have interested me much tbh, although I did get MW2, I really wasn't going to get Black Ops.

The best single player I ever had the pleasure of experiencing was the Metal Gear Solid:Guns of the Patriots on PS3. Played that so much that I did the Ultimate Playthrough in just under 4 hours :S

P.s. I realise that's third person, but it was so well made in my eyes it deserves a mention. Most developers wouldn't do too bad aspiring to the MGS campaigns.

Well said.

while i do see your point as it is pretty much an on rails shooter i enjoyed the sp a lot, as much as a bit more scope for exploration might of been nice i think there have been too many sandbox games the past few years and i have had my fill of gta clones. its why i think i enjoyed cod4 so much as it too was more holywood than westwood you know.

I wasn't too impressed with the gameplay and script in the previous Crysis games were pretty much your bog standard FPS but spiced up with the nanosuit to justify 'one-man army' FPS. But at least they had a Filipino jungle to crawl through; sneak up to a small patrol and spray them with dual 'micro-Uzi's, go prone and freak them out with 200 metre headshots with suppressed 'Kalashnikov', or sneak pass them altogether undetected. So Crysis 2 is no great deviation besides being in a dense urban environment, and tainted by consoles.

Run and gun... meh...

But that's because that's style of shooter, I milk as much stealth gameplay as the game plot allows.

As mentioned above, Metal Gear Solid while not strictly a FPS, has an absorbing gameplay and story.

  • 'Puzzle' elements in an action game that involves more than, 'go here and push this button, now go there to push another button'.
  • Plot twists you know Konami just love put in, but you don't know where to.
  • Engaging storyline with characters you can actually give a s about.
  • Gameplay that actually rewards stealth gaming, so you always want to go back and do it even better.
  • It does help to not have aliens.

Yeah reviews are really trash sometimes. One game I play, Monster Hunter, got a 4 or 5 from all critics when it came out. You know why they gave it such bad scores? The learning curve. Which is a shame, because that game is probably one of the most amazing games I've ever played (3000 hours clocked up on a handheld game).

On topic though, Crysis 2 isn't meant to be a graphical tyrant like it's predecessor. I think it did a great job in continuing the story, which is why I don't get why people don't understand the setting of the game. It's like they wanted to just drive around a jungle again and be like "COOL! I LOVE GAMES FOR SANDBOXING AND NOT THE ACTUAL STORY, WAAHOOO".

I also don't get what you mean by it's like every other FPS. Just actually think about what you said for a second, and revise it. Go find me another FPS with a buff like system, where you can swap between certain things to allow for flexibility. The only game I'd even consider to come close, is Breakdown. Sure, you can't swap between each buff like you used to, but that's because they integrated them into what you actually used it for in the first game, so you weren't swapping as much and wasting time. I think the game is definitely worth it's 90+. It's fun, if you aren't being narrow minded and comparing it to Crysis 1, and actually thinking of it as a game with a story.
