Crossfire confusion

All conroe mobos out atm (if they have crossfire) run at x8 x8 in crossfire mode...some of the crossfire boards for am2 for example can run at x16 x16 each lane for crossfire / sli...is there much of a performance issue between x8 x8 and x16 x16 as proposed by manufacturers?

Only on the higher end crossfire setups. I had 16x 4x crossfire with my x850 crossfire setup and took no hit.

I do beleive though that most are 16x 16x though...

hmmm so if i got the msi power up edition for example and ran two x1900xts in crossfire on x8 x8 mode i wouldnt see much of a drop in fps compared to the same setup (diff mobo) in x16 x16 mode?

X1900 crossfire is high end by almost everyones standards...

You wiill see a hit.

And you need a x1900xt/x and a crossfire edition.

IIRC they stopped the need to have a master crossfire edition card didn't they? Can someone else confirm.

Tomshardware did an article and although the test was done on older hardware, there was a very small difference in performance until the number of lanes becomes very low. I think that an 8x slots will be fine considering that Quad SLI still uses 16x slots.
