CPU runs only at half speed

Hi !

My mainboard is ECS P4S8AG. This board can clock 1.4 ... 2.8GHz (auto select)

FSB : 533MHz

CPU installed : Intel P4 (Northwood, 478 socket) 2.8GHz

My RAM is rated PC3200

Bios (POST) says the clock runs at 1.4GHz

I did a speed test (with CPUSpeedPro)which also reports 1.4G

i.e. MOBO chooses wrong freq.

I placed a different CPU (P4 3GHz), and the same thing happened : it ran at 1.5G

How can I override the board's auto select and make it run at 2.8G ?

It should, shouldn't it ?

I don't know enough about freq multipliers/ratios to solve this.

Thank you,

BeechBoy

there must be some kind of eco rubbish thats clocking the cpu down ....

i honestly wouldnt know where to look ...

Have you tried running an application or put the processor under load? Maybe the CPU just clocks down while idle.

Hi guys,

I found out what's wrong : CPU doesn't really fit the MOBO.

Thank you for the replies, BTW.

The CPU is 2.8HGz FSB800.

==> It runs at 2.8G if clocked at 200M (multiplier is 14)

MOBO is FSB533, thus can do 133MHz. But for unknown reason it chose to do 100MHz.

This is why I had 1.4G speed. 100M * 14 = 1.4G

Solution : Used BIOS to first set clock at 133. Then made some more increments.

All works fine at 143M.

This gives 143 * 14 = 2GHz.

Still not full trottle, but I can live with it. :-)
