How to Overclock Intel P4's - The Basics

i set my multiplier low on bios but,why multiplier is still same????:eh:

Almost all P4's have their multi's locked i'm afraid mate. If you need a hand overclocking your rig, just start a new thread on the forum and we'll help ya out ;)

Is it true that Abit boards read out temps up to 10C too high? Cause my P4 3.0 @ 3.4 ides at around 50C.

To be honest, all boards read temps inaccurately. Abit and Asus seem to have a bit of a bad rep for it, so it wouldnt surprise me if youre board is grossly inaccurate.

Yep, and you can add MSI to the list as well if you like LOL :D Seriously though, you've got to remember that there are a number of motherboard-induced variations to the CPU on-die thermal diode readings that make the reported temps inaccurate.

So would you say that idleing at 50C and load 60C is ok then?

For idle thats too high. Thermal throttling kicks in at around 65oc (ish) and will kill the performance of ur pc.

Ye i tested that with Throttle Watch and my cpu never throttles. even with fans at lowest and running 3DMARK06. I might give my PC a clean soon.

Can I ask one question?

Why is your CPU running slower than stock? :eh:

lol, old thread.

Anywhoo, it is wrong because of the CPU model. It is meant to be at 2.66Ghz. The multiplier had dropped itself. ;)

Replying for bios

Keep your system close to ac or window. Bios settings are sensitive settings use this settings carefully.Press dell key on start beep of the computer and choose the settings you want. After completion of your chose settings save settings and type exit command.:wavey:

LOL your multiplier in that picture has dropped, it is called Intel EIST, you can disable it in your BIOS and it will run at its full speed all the time.

My CPU (Intel Celeron 2.8GHz) won't OC at all, and this is in a 478 socketted motherboard, it just says: Overclocking failed!

GRR! LOL

Hello,

The actual clock speed of a processor is set by the motherboard. There are two ways to do this.

1. Hardware jumpers. You can change the jumpers to get different combinations of basic BUS speeds and multipliers. This method is used for most brands of motherboards. It is however inconvenient since you need to actually open the case to access the motherboard and to know what your doing. So if your looking for a motherboard that overclocks easily, look for “jumper free” overclockable motherboards.

2. With software "jumpers" or “jumper free” motherboards, you change the clock speeds of a processor using software embedded in the motherboard BIOS. Most overclockers like this option.
