CPu nice and crispy

So I got a 3930k and I put my H80 on it, I aplied AS5 and spread it nicely then after ataching my H80 and going into windows I noticed my idle temps where a whooping 60C!?!? Any idea how this is even possible, also I feel highly uncomfortable with this because when I run prime95 temps jump to 91C and the cpu throthles itself... No matter what over clock under clock voltage it runs that hot.

Maybe it has to do with the fact the H80 doesnt fit right, I had to sort of have some of the bolts loosse and get it on the CPU that way.... Any tips? Otherwise I'm going to get some better thermal paste, uhg =\

a tin layer of AS5 with a spreader, I reaplied and it seems to have dropped 15C. guess 7th was the charm. I also tightened the screws on the H80 a lot harder. Seems fine now. No more throteling.

It doesn't matter how you apply it tbh as long as it's only a very thin layer, just enough for it to transfer heat away from the CPU. X method, Y method, Z method it doesn't matter, although I always use the "Grain of rice/pea" method

Well ideally you should lap it to a mirror finish on the heatspeader and on the heatsink then not even bother with thermal compound as you won't need it.

I don't mean to sound like that i am pointing out the obvious but you did remove the stock H80 thermal compound that was already on the cooler?

What are the max temps you are seeing now?

80C now... still high but heh

There was none on it anymore, since I switched motherboards 3 times since I got it and CPU once. Since I went form an I5 2500k to an 3930K

Thanks for all the replies guys. It seems fine now I might overclock further using the blck instea do the multiplyer so I dont need much more voltage :3
