Cooling advice

Secrets

Afternoon guys, I've just got back into playing the old BF3 and noticed my CPU is getting a bit warm.

I used to peak around 75 degree's when playing but now it's gone up to 85 (not much but enough:(), this I presume to due to my much smaller Coolermaster Storm Scout case which has a little less fan power than my old cheap shit tacky case surprisingly.

Meh, regardless I'm running an i7 930 with standard heat sink and fan, however I'd like to upgrade it to a decent one as I presume a better cooling option will keep it at a much cooler temp, dur!

Can anyone recommend a good value top quality air cooling piece of kit, I don't want liquid cooling as I can't be fussed to maintain it regardless of it looking absolutely brilliant! :)

Let me know your thoughts and opinions!

coolermaster hyper 212 is recommended quite often, not very expensive either
take a look at it and see if it'd fit into your case

If you have small ram, you can use the Noctua NH-D14 CPU cooler. It will keep your CPU down in temps ;)

But the 212 is also lovely :D

Thanks guys, does the hyper for example come with the X-Clamp or is this an extra I'll need to buy.

For example if I buy the CM hyper 212, will it come with clamp, headsink and fan?

Cheers

the hyper 212 comes with everything you need mate

my friend uses it with a 3570k overclocked and its working a treat

Doesn't really matter if you mount it so that it pushes or pulls air through. As long as you make sure the airflow goes towards the back of your case. Mine is mounted in pull (see rig gallery in signature) and it doesn't matter temp wise.

If you mount it in push you might block one of your RAM slots though.

I see, so yours is currently pulling towards the rear there. I have an exhaust fan directly behind where you could have one... but you don't, so my heat will come straight from the 212 fan and directly into the exhaust fan, brilliant team work!

Thanks for the advice, hope it goes in like a treat!

I'm handy at building, just needed to be sure it will work correctly, cautious guy!

Oh yeah, that reminds me that I need to place my rear fan back. I have an adaptor to make it run at 5 Volt now :p It was noisy so I removed it.

Nothing wrong with being cautious! Better to post twice more on here than buy something that you cannot use properly :)

Fitted!

Hi guys thanks for the advice, I went for the Evo as mentioned I took a few pictures because I felt so pumped and excited after completion haha, strange satisfaction.

I never thought I'd have to remove the MB to actually fit the fan I was rather confused at first but then I got it! I'm so glad I spent a couple of hours a few weeks ago to tidy up the case and use 36 cable ties, otherwise this job would of been a huge pain!

Anyway here you are...

Again, thanks for the advice.

:O Did you just put the mobo on a cloth covered cushion ?? oh gawd. you'll be lucky if it still works.

That was probably not the best idea... :o

The rest looks good, though you might want to upgrade your case some time in the future :)

It looks like the fan on the cpu cooler and the one at the back are not blowing in the same direction, if so turn the one at the back round. Otherwise they're working against each other.

That case has no cable management options so I guess it's not too bad?

He's right, the cable management of the CoolerMaster Storm scout mk1 is rather poor the newer one has cable management, believe me I've done the best I can and cable tied the hell out of it to get the air flow at it's best. It looks worse than it is.. I'll take more pics tomorrow.

As for the fan being the wrong way round, I just assumed it was right -.-, why does an arrow point upwards? Does that indicate the direct in which the fans spins? Schoolboy error though I'll fiddle tomorrow :)

As for the cooling , it's now running at ~60-65 when on BF3 instead of the old 80-85.

Extremely impressed at the value and quality of it, at only £23...

Cheers

Changed the fan round as suggested so now it's not clashing with the rear fan, thanks for spotting. I took the chance to take a few more pics to show I really have tried my own cable management due to the case lacking in cable management features!
