Controlling the minds of players

I found a pretty good post on the mental set up of a decent CSS player. Take a look :) .....

Two time CPL champion Jacob "Nightfall" Stanton shows us the importance of controlling the flow of a match via "Mind Games".

Mind Games: Controlling the flow

One of the major factors in any match is the mindset of those playing. The level of confidence and an awareness of the things going on around a person directly effects the outcome of the match. But you already knew that. The thing most people don't know is that you're able to control the mindset of the opposing players by what you do early on in the game.

Allow me to relate a a personal experience of mine from Summer CPL 2005 as an example. While playing against Upper at CPL on Dust2 in the Winner's Bracket finals, haqshot of Upper was playing CT side mid. He was awp picking catwalk/middle, something that he explained to me later he frequently does. However, the difference this time was that the first gun round we both had awps, I moved up on catwalk and picked him in middle. Just a single kill, not a big deal, right?

Wrong. Haqshot didn't pick mid again in that match and if I remember correctly didn't do it the next time we played them on Dust2 in the CPL finals. That one shot was able to completely remove his confidence in picking middle, even though there is a good chance he would have been able to pick me next time. By losing that confidence, his entire style of play was affected, making him not nearly as big of a threat as he typically would be. This can be seen in these GameSense statistics.

So, what does that have to do with this article? It explains to you how easy it is to control the mindset of another player, by simply getting the first pick in a match you make that player play completely differently than he normally does. This can be true of whole teams as well, and is the reason for having multiple strats and fakes.

The whole point of this is to manipulate another team into playing your game instead of playing theirs. One way of doing this is through simple stacks. For instance, if you stack 4 people in A bombsite on de_cpl_mill, and your opponent pushes, it can completely remove their confidence in taking that bombsite. And while the A strat may have been their main strat, they'll choose to run it less because of the heavy A setup, meaning they're going to try to take B more often, so what you can do then is rotate a guy back B and play a typical 3/2 setup. The thing is, at this point, most teams stop thinking and adjusting, because not only have you knocked them on their heels by winning the round, you made them completely change their strat because of the heavy setup in the bombsite they were planning on taking. Making them try to create strats on the fly and take over the opposite bombsite, one of which that they have trouble with.

Another example, lets say on first CT gun round on de_cbble, you have an awp push mid tower, and an awp push left halls, both of which peeking and killing multiple guys. Not only is there a good chance you’ll catch them off guard and win the round, in doing so you’ll make them move up slower on mid simply because they’ll be waiting for you to peek next gun round. What this does is remove something that you desperately need on a map such as de_cbble: time. By picking off those players, you effectively lowered the round timer by about 30 seconds for at least a few gun rounds.

These are just a few examples of the ability to control the play of the opposing team. Many other ways to manipulate their play exist, and I’m sure you’ll be able to think up your own ideas to mess with your opposing team’s mind.

very interesting :)

something for the caller to think about. it works well on d2 if the CT B guy pushes thru tunnels, it makes the guys picking B very wary from then on

Tis pretty true, CS is all about morale imo. When you get owned a few times in a row with 1 or 2 dodgy/good shots morale drops and it seems impossible to get back in it.

Yeah I enjoyed that match the other night. I sucked ass for the 1st 12 rounds as CT but then went a bit mental as T. Once I get confident, some shots just happen and it seems so easy...
