hi guys. i used live update 5 on my msi z68a gd55 to update the bios. all was fine last night but now i am getting constant blue screens on it even when browsing the web. ive tried re setting the cmos and running with one memory module etc. is there any way to roll back the bios or switch to a secondary ( not sure if my board has one or 2) any help would be great guys :)

from the one it shipped with to the latest one via live update. ive cleared cmos again and fiddled around in the bios and its stopped crashing for now but when i turn my pc on it used to say a3 down the bottom right but now it says b4. could this be something to do with it? sometimes itll boot into windows when this appears but other times it wont :(

not yet, box is in the attic atm. ive been running folding@ home since i first posted this and it hasnt blue screened again but i daresay it will :/

i would have checked mine, but its buried in the garage with all my rig boxes, thats presuming that the gd-55 and the dg-65 use the same code outputs

you have went from version A3 to version B4 on the BIOS.
MSI support about BIOS flashing is scant. techspot was the only help about outside flashing
as MSI is all about LIVE Update..
do you have the B3 (non-generation 3) or G3 (generation 3) board?

What error is the blue screen giving? and do you have dump files?

Also why did you update the Bios? If it was for no reason other than to have the latest one then I would suggest reverting to an earlier version. Bios has always been a case of if it works its best left alone in my experience.

its the g3 version of the board. i never have the time to look at it it goes so quickly :( i though that aswell but live update kept pestering me about updating it so i did.

To make the blue screen stay on the screen do the following:

Start > Control Panel > System and security > System > Advanced System settings > in the startup and recovery area go to settings > uncheck automatically restart.

You will now have the time to write down the error code and can restart in your own time. Shove the error code in google along with your bios revision and you may get lucky on a solution or at least a clue towards what it wrong.

Also under the automatically restart box is "write debugging information" if you set that to small memory dump then when you get a blue screen a lot of relevant information will be stored in a dump file.

Reading dump files is black art though but someone may be able to help you with it.

right just got back from judo, booted up the pc and it blue screened before i could even join a battlefield game :( has anyone any idea what version of bios the board shipped with? looking on the msi website the first version was 23.1 but ive never looked to see what mine said before this.

EDIT: right i just opened it up and a green sticker caught my eye which when i googled it turned out to be the bios chip so i wrote down what was on it and all it said was e7681. is this the bios it shipped with?

ok so i managed to get a pic of the blue screen and the error was STOP: 0x0000003b which after ive googled around a bit seems like a driver or memory issue. can anyone confirm this?

in the windows folder, there should be a minidump folder.. this is where the error dumps go on
BSOD. one thing to check, especially 00003 errors is pci extensions like RAM, GPU and peripherials
on the pci(e) busses.
noted you have a z68, does this have video out? you can disable the GPU and run off the HD3000
graphics to rule out such interferences.

Is your machine overclocked? If so perhaps updating the bios has somehow pushed your OC into the realms of instability. Increasing Vcore a bit could help if it is the case with that BSOD code. But yeah as airdeano said find the dump file, it will tell you more precisely what caused the problem and help you narrow things down. You can also compare subsequent dumps to make sure the issue has the same cause every time.

In terms of the bios it shipped with, do you not have the CD that came with the mobo?

Also if you havent already try starting in safe mode, might help you get some info out of your machine before it BSODs on you.

im at my girlfriends atm but i was up till 1 am trying to sort something out of it. i eventually got a pic on my phone of the bsod. had an error of stop: 0x0000001a which after a bit of googling turned out to be a memory error? could this be something to do with the excellram im using? it has a 10 year warranty so im guessing its not a bad brand. is the original bios on the driver disk? if so i will reflash that when i get back monday and if it still blue screens ill return the ram.

ive tried to open the dump file but windows refuses to open it? also it was overclocked at 4.4 ghz with 1.36 v core just so it was 100% stable as i tried it on 1.35 and it worked but just wanted to be safe. ive reset the cmos multiple times so its all at stock/ auto settings now.

right just got back and my brothers said itll crash once in the morning then when he resets the pc it works fine for the rest of the day. he though it was going over 4gb of ram ( using over 1 stick seeing as i have 8gb) that was causing it to crash but i just loaded up unigene and task manager which made it hit 4.5gb and it was fine. any ideas what to do??

it was at 1.36 but im running stock atm to try and eliminate that as a factor. ive swapped the ram to slots 2 and 4 rather than 1 and 3 and it hasn't blue screened since so ill see how it is tomorrow. if it carries on blue screening ill email aria and ask about returning the ram.
