Considering a 670

Hey guys!

Well I've been looking at the benchies and I'm thoroughly impressed with them! Not saying the 560Ti I have is bad, but I can't hit it onto ultra settings without experiencing some stuttering.

I would have gone the SLi route but I prefer just having a powerful single GPU.

Worth the upgrade? I'm considering selling the 560Ti to put some money towards the 670.

The 670 is a great card and you won't be disappointed, it performs about the same as the 7970 for the same money.

If you are planning on overclocking it will be worth waiting for ttl's review to see how it stacks up against the 7950.

Hi Dani,

Based on the various reviews I've read the 670 is looking like a good performer. Various bench marks appear to show it shining more at 2560x1600, though it still gives a very respectable showing at the more common 1920x1080/1200.

In many benches a single 670 is giving scores that are 80% of what my two 570's in SLI get! However, benchmarks tend to paint a somewhat exagerated picture vs. real world stuff. Still, I'd say a single 670 is giving easily 50%+ over a single 570 at minimum. In some situations it can be as much as 80% - this is wholey based on what I've read of course.

As a single card solution I think you'd be very happy with a 670 coming from your 560ti. I can't help but feel however that they are a little pricy at the moment. Consider, I paid £250 for my Palit GTX 570 new within a week of launch - 580's were around the £425 mark for the cheapest at the time. I think the 670 is a stronger performer vs. the 680 than the 570 to the 580 though. The 2gb of vRam helps.

I confess, despite my two 570's generally eating everything up at my resolution of 1920x1200, I was tempted by the 670 - I mean, even at the current inflated prices it's circa £100 less than the 680, yet give 90% of the performance much of the time.

I think if prices for the 670 drop to the £280 mark I'll be upgrading my other rigs with 570's!

Anyone else notice how a few eTailers who were listing cards at ~£329 soon upped them by £10 or £20? That £310 Palit is certainly one of the better deals! I really liked my NV reference Palit 570, it's proven a strong and cool performer since I've had it.

Dani: Depending on your requirements I'd make sure you're aware of the differences between the two flavours of GTX 670 PCBs. There's the "reference" design that uses the shorter 670 PCB, then there's the non-reference design that uses the same PCB as the 680. The latter is more expensive (£30 - £60) but equally these versions have proven to be better overclockers. Oh, the latter also has 6+8 pin PCI-E power vs. the formers 6+6 pin. NV do it to confuse us you know...best to do you own homework of course.

Thanks guys.

I think once the prices come down I may get one, £300+ is still a little overwhelming for me for just a "small" upgrade. I could buy a new mobo (with more PCI-e slots) and a 560Ti for that price!

Guess I shall wait...

I'd probably go for the reference design and get a 200mm rad for the front of my case and add the GPU to my loop.

At least the rest of your rig should make good use of a 670. When I got my first 570 I was still using my Q6600 system - it was at a respectable 3.6ghz and had 8gb Ram but it was only when I moved to the 2500k did it really come alive.

Fingers crossed those prices start to move down soon, hopefully a further agressive price move by AMD will ensure that. I'd expect your 560Ti to still fetch a reasonable price 2nd hand, wouldn't you think? Might help the 670 hurt a little less...

Just spec'ing up my own loop for my current rig (yeah, back on that one again after a break) I almost decided on a pair of 670's as getting blocks for my miss-matched 570's has proven a right pain in the behind. However sanity (provided by an empty wallet) came to my aid lol.

Yeah I guess that's true, cheers for that Scoob.

Glad to know you're back in the game, how are you feeling these days?

Ha, I always get smacked down by that empty wallet card

Looks like the 560Ti's are still going for good money new at the moment - looks like around £150 is the average asking price. I'd say asking half that or a little more, depending on the age of your card, would be a more than fair asking price.

Yeah, getting there slowly, still in pain but my back is working more reliably thankfully. Actually managed to sit in a cinema seat for over two hours today. Might sound silly but that's quite an achievement for me! Didn't even need drugs! Lol.

Anyway, here's hoping those 670 prices drop soon and demand for 2nd hand 560Ti's increases

yup yup

And that nvidia releases a GTX660 soon ^^ (would be a nice dedicated physx card for me maybe? or I could run a GTX 560 for PhysX I'm pretty sure my 690 won't be bogged down to much.)

yeah definitely scoob. dabs had the oc gigabyte windforce for 330, then they changed it to 340 the next morning, and 350 by the afternoon of the same day. what the heck. that would have been 315 with voucher and cashback, but w/e. i'll wait for a non-reference 670 to hit 300 and i'll buy then

I don't think I'll be making a GPU purchase until the 700 series appears - assuming it is indeed what we're all hoping it will be. Still, that purchase would likely be a whole new rig too...but I'm getting ahread of myself. I'd hope to see prices come down a fair bit as availability improves, though there does seem to be plenty of stock about in the UK at the moment.

I think if I'd been on a 470 rather than a 570 (SLI) then I'd have bought a pair of 670's by now - even though the launch price would have hurt.

Ha awesome, hope so as well Scoob!

I haven't seen many 560Ti's going for that cheap of a price, although I do have the MSI HAWK edition which is pretty expensive in shops here (RRP around £200+) so I was hoping to sell the card for that £140 mark. Ah well, see how it goes really. As I said, I'll probably wait until prices come down and see if it's worth the upgrade. I think I'll end up waiting for the 700 series cards.

Glad to know you're a little better and getting slowly back onto your feet again!
