Computer Isn't Working :(

Hi Guys,

I've left my computer on overnight which I do nearly all the time. I was download and folding etc etc.

It was on in the morning, and then I cam back and it was going suspiciously slow, and the hard drive was making weird noises, powering up and powering down type of sound.

This has happened before, after I partitioned the hard drive. What I did to make it work again, is to take the hard drive out and lay it on anti-static packaging, and it then worked fine.

But I did this, thinking it will work again, I put back in the HDD Cage and then my computer doesn't turn on atall. It beeps once, which it did before and then it powers down :cussing:.

I've cleared CMOS and unplugged all the unnecessary things (DVD-ROM, Both HDD's and some fans). Still it doesn't work.

I don't know what to do, any help?

Still wouldn't answer the computer not booting up though.

I'm thinking insufficient power. It would explain the hard drive turning off and on and rotating at inconsistent speeds. How many watts does your PSU have? And you wouldn't by any chance have both the 4-Pin molex and SATA power connectors hooked up to the HDD would you?

100th post :)

It's a Corsair HX520W.

It's weird, was working fine earlier. I looked into my Motherboard Manual, and it said one short beep is a sucessful bootup, about 1 second after the short beep, the whole machine powers down.

Yeah, I just checked your profile.

Hmm, 520W should be more than enough to power what you have. The only thing that might be pushing it is the 8800. Maybe try removing a few things just to see if the system actually boots up. Unplugg your CD Drive, take out a stick of RAM and maybe even take out the video card and see if the system can stay powered on.

If the hdd is tapping/clunking, the heads have prob gone.

Bit wierd how the mobo won't post with the hdd disconnected tho :(

Now this is odd.

I unplugged my GFX Card (8800GTS 320MB) via the PCI-E power cable, but the card was still in the slot. It gave the high pitch noise, meaning the power isn't plugged in. But the rest of my computer was booted up , it didn't power down.

So it looks like my graphics card is causing the power down, with the PCI-E Power cable plugged in.

Yaya, fixed it I think.

Changed the PCI-E cable, and the HDD booted first time!

KNOCK WOOD FOR ME PEOPLE AND CROSS YOUR FINGERS!.

Thanks for all the replies, and I'll keep you updated.

Seems lack of power is the culprit then mate.

Might be time to invest in a more powerful PSU.

I see he's fixed it. Just an FYI, a quality 500w PSU is enough for a QX6700 & 8800GTX w/a few HDD's, overclocked.

Ahh...

Bugger. Well, it wasn't the PCI-E cable, I forgot that I took 1 stick of RAM out.

Then I put the other one back in, and it doens't work.

So one stick is duff. Now to try different slots.

Well, the RAM and HDD is gonna be RMA'd.

How will I go about packaging the HDD? I need to send it to Seagate.

RAM to OcUK - Unfortunately.

Good luck Bloomz!

Lets hope OCUK don't have a spazz, eh? :o

Why do you have to send the HDD to seagate... why not OCUK?
