competition

hi all
don't know if anyone has put this up as an idea before but I dident see anything so I like to put the idea out there

in the last 2/3 competitions ive seen on the forums new users coming here and openly saying im here just to try and win something sort of hit and run if you will

I don't know about most but im here to be part of the oc3d community
not just for freebees but to help if I know someone that needs help ask something wen im stuck look at what mad rigs being built in the build logs

maybe there should be some kind of control who can enter a competition
like how the market place works a x number of posts a x amount of time before you can enter

I have to say it got to me the most in the last competition after finding out tom was in hospital most was just asking if thay had won and why it was taking so long to find out

sorry if I sound like im going on one just venting lol

id like to thank tom for all your hard work making the forums what thay are :)

You're forgetting that the main idea of these competitions is to attract new members onto the site, which in turn generates the site money.

All competitions will have people that do that, and forcing people to have X amount of posts just leads to people going through every 'Introduction' and 'Rig Gallery' thread saying 'Welcome' and 'Nice Build'.

I'd like to bring your attention to this thread however:

It doesnt make the site money, it brings traffic. With traffic its then up to me to make the money.

End of the day dude this is a business and limiting entries would mean that the prizes wouldnt be so big.... I dont care who people are and how many posts they have. An entry is a member and thats fine by me.

You are also not the first person to say stuff like this, you just need to remember OC3D is a business and Ive been doing this a while ;)

every long time/active member feels that way, but once you realize that the giveaway itself isn't really the point you will feel glad to see all those new people.
i really don't care if i win anything in the competitions, hell i haven't even really bothered finding the chicken dinner thing, i am glad the competition grows the forum a little and helps the staff run the site. when the competition is over maybe a newbie goes with the 780 never to return, but us active members profit from the attention the website gets.
so yea, win win.

tl;dr
i am here because i enjoy the forum, not because i get the chance of winning free stuff.

I get what your saying I do just wen I see new users saying im just here to win and thay don't tend to stay or add much to the community from what I can see maybe im wrong I could well be
there are users on here much longer then me and a lot more posts some of them are still rocking old intel 775 cpu,s and old gtx cards I don't see any of them show boating about wanting a new card and not willing to pay for it
I remember a guy who won 3rd in a competition he won a ivy 3570k
the guy dident have the money to buy any of the kit he needed to use it
tom seeing the guy wasent a micky taker helped him out
I think a lot of users would like to see more of that and less of pisstakers trying it on

I take your point tom its your job how you make money I get that
just been thinking about it for some time and wen you ended up in hospital it sort of got to me your stuck there feeling like hammered shit 90% of the posts was just about whos has won and so so silly I know how you was feeling ive had the same thing happen to me not a bad tho

Not everyone who arrives because of competition advertisement leaves. I, myself found this place after watching Tom's 4770k review/Haswell competition. Thing is, OC3D rocks and those that don't see that when they arrive are muppets and are better off sledging somewhere else.

Competitions are there for good reason. I for one, am thankful for the Haswell competition as I may never have stumbled here otherwise :)

It doesn't matter too much if loads just join for the competition and then never come back, because some people do stick with us; ;)

I believe there was a post about a week ago regarding the next competition being for members only anyway. I think a mix of member exclusive, and open competitions would be the best anyway.

I finally joined the forum after Tom mentioned a comp on youtube. I think it was a Gigabyte motherboard being given away. If I'm honest I intended to just enter and never come back, but it turns out there's a lot of decent content on here.

There are plenty of other computer forums out there, but I like how this one has a more mature community. I guess that's why I'm still here.
