ive been trying to install linux on my compaq 1850r and every distro ive tried dont boot and some dont even finnsih installing. some refuse to go into the gui, ive tried everything i can think of and most of the stuff the people in #overclokers can think of any ideas ?

its a dual 500

with 512mb ram

a comapq smart array 3200 with a raid 0 array

and a single 9 gb on another onboard controller

tried installing to both

I have a problem when the Kernal can't load the Graphical interface. Think its ATI's shite drivers for me

What GFX card is it?

The server is getting a little long in the tooth, but have you tried an earlier version of RedHat? From what I've read the 1850 was tested and certified with RH 6.1 and 6.2, and tested with 7.0.Perhaps you could try version 8 ftp://archive.download.redhat.com/pub/redhat/linux/8.0/en/iso/i386/

Plus, have you gotten the latest ROMpaq drivers?

*4.15 A (9 Apr 02);

A couple of other things to try:

*disable the Standard VGA, and

*supplied apm=off at boot

Other than that, I'm stumped :(

Edit:

I have just found some info, that apparently the embedded NIC being enabled would

stop Linux from getting past detecting the monitor. The problem in this case can be fixed by temporarily disabling the NIC.(worth a try ;))
