Cheap Anti-GPU Sag.

Wraith

Bettyswollocks
So through out my day I see many many gorgeous rigs but the one thing that makes me cringe (not cable management) is graphics card sag, there are all sorts of devices you can buy to give you some lift but I feel they are crude and ugly so I decided to look at what I had lying around and get tweaking and here is what I came up with.

Items used.
1x CD jewel case
1x Trusty dremel
1x Sharpie
1x Ruler
1x A little bit of vinyl left from modding (purely for looks) the finish is not important here.

Please let me know what you think.

Not a half bad idea, I wouldn't count on it long term though, cd cases are NOTORIOUSLY cracky/fragile.. (I'm surprised it survived a dremel to be completely honest)

If you're hiding it in Vinyl why not make something from metal that will be sturdier?

Edit: this is actually one of my own pet-hates so I'm actually thinking about this at the back of my mind (with water-blocked cards it's a bugger!)

It's just a rough one off idea for now I was surprised at the strength of the plastic, I have some acrylic sheet and some alloy so I'm going to play around with it later and probably introduce some kind of cut out design into the bracket. :)

Hm, I might just "borrow" this idea and modify if a bit for my build if you don't mind.
A very nice idea indeed!

I'm completely with the idea of having something to prop up the videocard, it can't be great for the pcb or pci-e lane.

while I've been thinking about some form of support I've led my case on its right side, which sorts the problem and gives me a little extra work space :)

Good idea though

i dont need this cos mine arent saggin at all but major kudos to you sir. that was a magnificent idea. a little ghetto in choice of material lol but still fantastic brain thought.

I'm thinking copper...
Nice idea! I'm going with a 5mm Acrylic to match my case and possibly incorporate the OC3D logo into the Vinyl cover... mmm

I'm lucky as I have a Laser cutter and Vinyl plotter at my disposal
Going to have a real good play with this idea this weekend.

now that looks great, I couldn't think of many ways to do it, I kept coming back to a vertical support from the base of the up to the sagging corner of the videocard. (think a drinking straw made of metal)

Well, you know, first I have to see if my card even sags, and I might have to change
things slightly because it's reverse ATX and right below the card there are outlets
for the M/B block. But yeah, if need be I'll figure something out. ;)

Seems fine if you have 1 card, but if you have 2, 3 or 4 I'm not sure it would work as you'd have less or no room to attach the plastic/acrylic/metal.

For a single card though seems like a nice solution.

One advantage of the RV02/FT02/TJ11 type cases I guess is the cards don't sag!

if you have more cards (and room at the bottom underneath) you could support the lower card then use more acrylic (or other material) to support each car by wedging between them, kind of stack them up?

I'd be careful with copper, don't forget that thing uses electricity :P don't short it out!

Yup, it's just the one card for the time being. Maybe I'll eventually get a second
one. It wouldn't necessarily need to be another Titan, as I don't plan on doing SLI
(nowhere near the screen resolution to make use of that), but I'll be using my
GPUs for doing computing (BOINC).

But yeah, a multi GPU setup would require some modifications.

True dat. :)

Yeah, something like that, probably. If I ever get more GPUs I'll likely stop at
two, so I might be able to support the lower one from below and the top one from
top.

Anyway, if that ever happens it's not in my immediate future anyway. ;)

Now wouldn't that be hilarious.

"Guys, I shorted out my Titan!"

Everyone would go

of course you are, what else would you use in your build?

True, that was not exactly hard to guess.

Although I'm not yet sure what I'll be going with for the build after that. It's still a long
way off though, what with depleted funds, college and such, but hey, one can never
start planning too early...

Great idea dude :) And you made it look good too, I just wonder, why didn't you use some aluminium or something instead of plastic? It'd have been much stronger.

I can imagine now all the people that are going to be doing this xD I probably will in the future as well

This was just an "Idea" at the time and it's just a mock up at that but even so, I'm surprised at the strength of even thin weak plastic in this application.
I'll be making a permanent version this weekend from either 5mm Acrylic or Alloy, as for others copying me I'm not fussed if it saves damage to our rigs then it's win win :).

After a night of heavy gaming the original cracked and snapped I think it was probably a combination of heat, vibration and pressure so I made another from Acrylic and slightly thicker also etched the OC3D logo into it ^_^ I tried 5mm Acrylic but we then run into a tiny problem of screw length but I'm not concerned this time around as I trialed this one in an old case with a bag of sugar hanging off the end of the bracket.
