Car photos/discussion thread

a quick question guys, to get a second opinion really, some guy told me that with the cone filter I recently installed in my car I am going to kill my engine, any suggestions or recommendations?

Nope you won't kill your engine with a cone filter.

Increase in BHP (tiny amount)
Increased Fuel consumption
Increased noise (growl)

No damage though.

At first I believed it was a 100hp but apperently its not, I have no documentation of the car so it might be a 100 and I dont know, I've settled on 75 as the guys on the fiat forums said so.

its a 1999 Fiat Bravo with a 1.9L 75HP turbo diesel engine, I don't know the guy, he was on the fiat forum and he commented on a post I did (I already asked there but those forums are too slow for me :) )

It wont do it any harm, an air filter is a filter unless its fubbered or choking your engine but then you will just be down on power. The only real reason people change the air filter on cars to a cone style is the added induction noise which on a diesel imo sounds shit. They wont add horsepower not even on a highly modified car will they add power but they will make it easier to get power on higher boost settings but if your going down that route the air filter wont be an expense ha.

Seriously only 75 bhp?! out of a 1.9. My mums 307 has a 1.6 tdi and its 110bhp. My 206 1.4 petrol has 75 bhp. No offence but that seems a tad low :P

Different engines and technologies. Your'e talking about 10 years of diesel technology at the very least. Diesels ten years ago were low pressure turbod and had little power and were aimed at fuel economy. They are a different beast now. The same could be said about petrol but rather along the lines of fuel economy. A polo blue motion can get 60+ mpg which would have made old diesels look silly.

Air filters without other mods will more than likely do absolutely nothing power wise. Its only when you are running high boost levels do you need a free flowing filter but that is like 0.9 to 1 bar plus. The increased fuel consumption is debatable but it can depending on the car. Noise though is the real reason people do that mod.

I thought you were only supposed to use cold air intakes on superchargers or something.

Cold air intakes and cone filters are two different things. Cone filters are used mainly on turbo cars because they allow the air less resistance to get into the turbo. This means the turbo works easier and thus can prolong its life. However that really only applies at higher boost levels. Low pressure diesel turbos it wont affect.

Cold air intakes are like funnels with a filter at the end going from the front of the car usually to the engine. This allows the colder air to get into the engine. Mainly used on NA engines due to the lack of air coolers such as intercoolers or charge coolers.

The reason a CAI is pointless on a turbo car is because the few degrees its cooled by will heat up significantly when it goes through the turbo. A well ducted intercooler and good air passing through it is better for a turbo car power and running wise than a cold air intake and even arguably a cone air filter.

Aah thanks, my brother used to have mini with a cold air intake and it looked pretty nice with the pipe in the grill but in the actual engine it had a big plastic K&N swirl that didn't look that great. But yeah thanks for the knowledge :)

I quite want a Ford Capri for my next car I've decided. Maybe put a newer engine in it as well. Probably going to have to wait for insurance to come down considering I'm 19.
Something like this but with 'moar low' and better wheels. Opinions?

that looks cool, I would probably clean the front, those indicators look horribad, maybe something more (sleek?). some big wheels and low ride height would make it looks the shiznit.

how is insurance for you brits? here it is not that bad, mine was £300 for insuring a 14 year old car with a 1.9L engine on a 19 year old, it will go cheaper every year until I am 25 years old.

I'm 19 and I pay close to 1k for a 12 year old 1l corsa thats probably worth half of that.

YUM: (I' not sure why I'm in a retro ford mood)

bothering you with my questions once again, this is a simple yes or no though :) do airbags pumps/cans/whatevertheyarecalled need to be filled or serviced every once in a while like airconditions do?

First things first, I'm sorry for the double post but its kind of an urgent one as I need the car ready until tonight and the fiat forums (my car is a fiat) are way too slow to respond.

so anything on the airbag thing?

and today I removed the passenger side safety belt as it was constantly getting stuck and was irritating as hell to anyone trying to latch it, so today I decided to remove the entire door panel and take it out, and this is what I found, never seen anything like it....

the second hand ones I found from the same car as mine dont have that stick looking thing, should I be ok, what the f does that thing do anyway?

I thought they were a small explosive charge?

No air bags don't need a service.
Its a one shot system, so if it goes off, then yes it would need replacing.

The car will have a self check, normally linked to a light on the dash, if the system has lost pressure, or is not working, hence why its a instant fail if the airbag light is on during an mot.
