Cant Get Vista Installed on my new PC...

Hey guys,

I have got my PC to turn on, but when it does all I get is

'DISK BOOT FAILURE -INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER'

I have tried both with the motherboard disk, and the vista disk but same thing.

I have tried going to the BIOS and putting on Fail Safe Load.. neither with success.

I have googled and found loads of things but none specific to this problem. I have just turned on my new PC (although the CD drive is ancient) and this happens.

Any help would be great...

thats a bloody anoying error.

the way i found to fix it was in the bios

you change the boot options, so the first thing it goes to is cd

it will probably be set to hard drive atm

look for boot device order or somthing similar

there should be 3

change all 3 to cd drive, dvd drive, whatever it is

then try it :)

As ionicle mentioned above, It is to do with your boot sqecuance, You need to change the boot order so it trys to boot from cd, then hard drive ect. All this can be managed in the BIOS.

Hmmm, white beer.

Ok so I press F12 to get to the booth menu. There is a little cross next to HDD, so that is obviously where it i trying to boot from. Thus I go down to CDROM, same thing, same error... Any other uggestions?

to go into the bios itself

and there should be 3 specific options on there own

like

1. hard drive (ST78684856) or somthing

2. CD Rom

3. Removeable

change it so it looks like:

1. CD Rom

2. CD Rom

3. CD Rom.

Ok found them and changed them, still same thing happened :(

Any more ideas?

Much appreciated.

The HD Is SATA... Is that important? Also i it posibly because the CD Drive is from 98? Finally does pressing the on off switch a lot effect anything in anyway because I have pressed it a lot... Ill go and have a play whilst I await your reply.

yep, SATA hard drive, unplug it from the mobo

i had a problem with that before

do that, then load it up

when it comes to formating, THEN plug it in...

get a newer CDROM drive :P

does your board have 2 IDE ports?

It has 1 IDE Slot but my cable splits it into two.... why?

see if they work

Ok taking the sata cable out did nothing...

I only was supplied with 1 IDE cable...

How do I set it to master?

On the back of your HDD there are several small pins, two of these should have a plastic "jumper" going over them, connecting the two pines, you want to look just above this and fine where it says somthing like master or slave (might be abbreviated), then move the jumper covering the slave pins so that it covers the master pins.

Well i hope that helps, but it might be wrong... has been awhile since i built my rig :)

just go into your bios and tell us what it is showing. I.E dvd drive, hard drive. If the bios detects them, then there plugged in ok.

have you another pc you can try to boot the cd with. I personally think you have a dodgy cd/dvd

This is the first and last

ing time I make a PC (excuse the french)

Absolutely nothing just works. It is bloody ridiculous.

First a dead motherboard, then a PC that cant even install and operating system, Now one of the screws screwing the hard drive in wont even come out leaving a hole in the side of my HD, and still a screw in it.

Does anyonw know how I can make this piece of junk work....

Thanks

everything went wrong on my htpc build, i felt like never doing a build again as the time it took to rectify was stupid. But i did do another build myself and turned out alot cheaper and had a satisfied feeling. So stick with it and you'll sort it out soon enough.

Are you trying to load Vista (DVD) onto a CD-rom?

I have built hundreds of comps and only had 1 or 2 pieces(out of hundreds) that were defective (usually my fault).

It tends to be something simple and it usually takes time to figure it all out when its ur first time. Have patience, dont force things and go slow.

Patience grasshopper

Thats what i thought, you cant install Vista on a cd drive afaik. Get a nice sata DVD writer. There like £20 from Special Tech.

Thanks to those who suggested the obvious. I was trying to work it on a 1998 CD Drive LOL The time I wasted....

Anyway All is well now I believe. Just some quick questions. When I installed vista my WEScore was 1 because the Graphics card drivers wernt installed. I tried installing them, and thought I had but my score only went up to 1.9

Thus i went on the internet on downloaded http://ati.amd.com/support/drivers/vista32/common-vista32.html

This took my graphics scores up to 5.9/5.8 but a base of 5.5.

How do I tell if I have the correct drivers for each thing installed?

Secondly the vista disk I have was a 32bit edition. I heard someone say make sure you get the 64bit edition, otherwise you are wasting all your components. Is this true? How to I upgrade?

32 bit is fine for the moment mate. It appears that Vista's successor is even going to offer 32 and 64 bit versions. As for making sure that you have the latest Vista drivers you can get Vista to check for you

Simply go to Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Device Manager > Update Device drivers...and Vista will check for you. Nice and easy, lazy style.
