Can someone please help me?

Hi all,

OK, before I start I should point out that I am SERIOUSLY out of the loop on the latest components. My current PC spec is below and is now pretty out of date.

I only switched it on yesterday having not used it for the past 3 years as it's been in my loft since 2011 (we moved house and I never got around to setting it up).

Anyway, here is my current PC:

• Intel Core 2 Duel 6400 @ 2.1ghz (I think) - It used to be around 3.2ghz overclocked.
• Super Talent PC2-8000 DDR2 2GB @ DDR500 / 4-4-4-12
• Abit AB9 Pro motherboard
• 1 x Maxtor 80gb SATA
• 1 x Barracuda 160gb SATA
• XFX 6800 GF
• 750W PSU Tagan Easycon Modular
• SB Audigy 2
• 750W PSU Tagan Easycon Modular
• Windows Vista Home Premium
• Full super dooper watercooling kit - D5 pump, Swiftech 240mm rad, Aquaxtreme MP-05, 1/2" DD UV Tubing, T-Line with fillport.
• Razer Deathadder 1800DPI mouse
• No headphones (I'm currently using some Sony Pulse ones from my PS4).

So....

I'm now looking at this PC and thinking that I should bin it and start again.

All I really want to do at this stage is play some Counter Strike Source and Counter Strike GO as I really enjoy this game. I'm not too bothered about playing games that require really heavy power as I tend to use my PS4 for most other gaming. However online FPS games like CS are best played on a PC, hence the reason for me booting it back up again.

With regards to buying new bits, I've started in places where I'm a bit more comfortable and have looked at buying a new mouse and headphones. Namely a Razer Kraken 7.1 headset and a Razer Taipan mouse.

I also have a 24" wide-screen Dell monitor that I'm happy with, so it's really only the box that I need.

So OC3D, can anyone give me some advice? Am I better just buying a ready made box from somewhere like CCL Online, or should I buy components and try and build it myself. Please note that I've not built a PC since 2005, so am very out of touch.

Many thanks for anyone who takes the time to respond.

Cheers,

Chris.

How much do you want to spend?

Sounds like an i5/AMD 8320 with a AMD 270x/Nvidia 760 might fit your bill :).

How much do I want to spend? Well maybe around £500 but don't mind increasing this if something better is out there.

I did see these and wondered if they would do the trick:

Or this:

http://www.misco.co.uk/product/2155...downgrade-to-Windows-7-Pro-64-3-Year-Warranty

If I can, I'd like to avoid having to build it myself. I simply don't have the time (with a young family) to be buying bits and building it into a case. I'm not being lazy, but I'd just like to buy a box, plug it in and pretty much be done with it.

The HP doesn't have a graphics card for starters :P. Its much cheaper to build your own at the moment.

Well while your CPU is pretty slow, your GPU isn't actually that bad so why not just load up those 2 games you're wanting to play and see how they run? They're not that new either and your rig might have enough grunt to play them on medium or so graphics settings. You don't sound like you're after cutting edge graphics or performance, don't want to build or do anything in depth or spend any money so I'd suggest first seeing if you can live with the performance that rig will give you.

Don't really need a new mouse either if yours is working fine. The DeathAdder is the best gaming mouse on the planet in my opinion.

Cheers everyone.

I totally agree and will fire these games up to see how they perform. I just thought that rather than trying to flog a dead (or dying) horse with my old PC, I could get a new one and just enjoy using it. You never know, I may end up doing more on it if it were capable of better things.

The mouse is a slight problem in that one of the buttons seems to be working intermittently. It also has a lot of wear down one side and looks pretty tired. Therefore I thought it would be worthwhile replacing it with something more up to date, hence the question around the Taipan.

Headphone wise, my Sony Pulse ones are fine, but by being wireless, they need to be constantly charged up. They are also not really designed for the PC and therefore I thought I'd get some new ones.

Finally I need a new mouse-mat and was again looking at what Razer had to offer.

When I was gaming back in 2005-7, I used Razer products a lot and always got on with them very well. However the scene has probably moved on now, so I'm wondering if there are better alternatives out there now?

I'm a big Razer guy so don't blame ya. For a mat I use the SteelSeries 4D which is a hard mat but not all that big. Works much better than the cloth mats I've used including Razer's. If you Ike your DeathAdder, check out the 2013 version. Same shape, textured grip instead if smooth and a better sensor. It's a superb mouse.
