Cable Lacing Guide

Ah well, sometimes the obvious escapes one. I've had it happen countless times,
most crucially in university exams :o

My god I hate that feeling when I get the test paper back and realise how fuckin stupid I was a couple of days before -.-

My god I hate that feeling when I get the test paper back and realise how fuckin stupid I was a couple of days before -.-

Funniest exam I ever wrote was in Thermodynamics. For some reason they had
decided to make it unusually difficult (you get lots of old tests you can solve for
preparation, those were quite a bit easier, and not because I had the answers ;)).

Now, that in and of itself isn't really all that bad since the grading scale is only
determined after all the exams have been corrected and the minimum you have
to reach in order to pass is mostly determined by how well/badly the other students
did.

So there I am, quickly realizing that I'm completely and utterly screwed, and
all I can do is start to grin like hell at the absurdity of my situation. I look up
from my table with a huge grin on my face and look straight at the guy right
next to me. He's not taking things so well and is close to crying (seriously, his
eyes are tearing up). Upon seeing my huge grin his face suddenly flushes
with red and he looks like he's about to puke (as in: he's actually convulsing
slightly). This in turn amuses me so greatly that I almost laugh out loud in the
midst of a room full of students writing their exams.

Looking around I then realize that most other students also have similarly
desperate looks on their faces, which makes me quite hopeful that not all is lost.
Many of them could easily get worse results than I will, which is all I really need.

It's funny how other peoples misfortunes can make oneself feel much better
if your own situation is a bit less than good...

anyone tried some work with lacing? this is my final work (I will try to replace the two cable ties with lacing once I get around figuring it out how to do it :) ).

Link to Rig Gallery which will show more lacing work once I upload more pics --> maniac's OC"3"D Rig Gallery

Well, this is good timing, just as I have finally caught up with all my notifications, emails
etc.

I'll get back to you on that thing as soon as I'm able.

Mmmm well I know what I'm doing this weekend!:) I've never been happy with the way the cables sag in my rig this is the answer I think.

Huehuehue, our cult is growing...

Seriously though, it really is very practical if done right. But it does take more time
compared to zip ties and similar wizardry (worth it IMO though  ).

Whipping Technique

So, a small update. maniac asked me a while ago how I did the knots on the double
wire in ZEUS. I would have really liked to do a vid on this as well, but at the moment
time just doesn't permit that, so here it is in picture form. I hope it is somewhat
understandable nonetheless, otherwise feel free to ask for clarifications.

I didn't actually know what this knot was called until I did some digging and found
out that it's a sort of whipping knot, to be specific the common whipping if I have
understood things correctly.

It's not very complicated but not necessarily obvious just from looking at it.

Also, it's the same knot I'm using to make the sleeving ends on HELIOS' wires:

You can find a tutorial for a variation of this knot here. However, since I only found
that website after already having taken my pics I thought I might as well upload
them anyway. ;)

So, here we go:

A loop...

...and around the bundle which you wish to lace, over the original loop.

Press down where the two ends cross and hold tight.

Then wind the red end around the bundle as many times as you deem
necessary. I usually do at least a dozen loops.

Thread the end which you have been looping around the bundle through
the loop from step one on the side towards which you were looping (it sounds
a lot more convoluted than it actually is, just put the end, now yellow, through
the original loop).

Pull on the other end...

...and tighten the original loop until it slips under all those loops
you did around the bundle. Then pull on both ends and tighten things down,

which should give you this result. Cut off the ends as close to the package
as possible and you have a clean looking knot. :)

I hope this is somewhat understandable together with the additional websites,
otherwise don't hesitate to ask for clarifications. :)

It's really not a very complex knot, just a non-obvious one IME.

Happy lacing,
-aw

TBH its pretty easy once you understand what you have to do :P

Props to alpenwasser

That is awesome, when i first watched he video this morning i didn't understand what it was for but i think i might try it once i get braided extensions.

"Brand recognition" is a bit of a problem with this. As far as I have been able to make
out, cable lacing is the term which is most technically accurate and is mostly used
by those who do this sort of thing professionally. But I suspect that to most people
lacing is not necessarily the most obvious term in this context and they might
describe it more as cable sewing (which is actually what I searched for when I first
had the idea of doing this) or cable stitching, or at least those two terms are what I
have encountered quite often. A guy on OCN who also makes cable lacing tutorials
actually uses the two latter terms, I suspect primarily for this reason (not totally sure
since I've never asked him though).

I considered doing the same and labeling the video differently, but I wanted to be accurate
to the best of my knowledge, so I used lacing.

Thanks for stopping by, and have fun! :)

Finally had the time and 1mm wax cotton to go ahead lacing and I love the outcome, thanks again Alpenwasser this guide has been invaluable. :)

This is an awesome thread and guide alpenwasser. I hadn't seen it before! When i finally get braided cables (albeit extentions) i will give this a shot, the video is frigging awesome as i wouldn't know where to start! Don't ever delete that video :p

Haha, thanks for the kind words, I appreciate them. :D

And there's no reason it shouldn't work on extensions as well, so go
right ahead.

Also: No, I really have no intention of deleting that vid. That would very
much go against the spirit of spreading knowledge. ;)

That's cool man! Really informative... which can be really hard to find sometimes. Pictures only tell half the story, especially when your say, covered in cables :p

heh, i only say that as the times you click on a thread with 'this video has been removed' :p My bad attempts at jokes ;) I will 100% try this out once i can afford the cables to spruce up my rig :D

I can assure you it works on extensions as that's what I've done. :)

Nice! That's going on the list of things i need to do ;)

I would have been /really/ surprised if it didn't. :p

Yeah, I hate it when pics and vids go missing. Looking forward to your results. :)
