[Build] Micro Marvel

Actually, I build VM's for businesses, so having 32GB ram and a 6 core makes a helluva lot of sense for me.

And considering the price difference between 8GB and 16GB, why would you settle for less ?

Windows as an OS itself can only use maximum of 4gb as it's coded in 32 bit. Programs, such as games, are also coded in 4gb, meaning they can only really use a maximum of 4gb. So for a gaming rig, anymore than 8gb will never be used, and so it's pointless to buy it.

As for the processors...games and pretty much every other program out there isnt even utilised to run with anymore than 2 cores. Because of this, there's actually no gains whatsoever in even running a 3960x i7 over a 2120 i3.

The only time when having an i7 and more than 8gb of RAM can help is while rendering images / videos, as these programs are designed to utilise everything they can on a computer.

As for the closing the thread cause of opinions BS...this isnt opinion, this is fact. Don't ask for mods to close the thread just because you dont like what we're saying, because that's massively ignorant and disrespectful of the people trying to help you...also exactly what another user used to do when he didnt like the advice we gave him.

I'm really starting to wonder...
120GB intel 520 vs 120GB sandisk extreme....
99% same performance

and the intel costs 1/3 MORE... and you think I'm going to SAVE money with that ?

I assume I know who your talking about?

If you want an ssd that is more a less garunteed not to brake then go intel, if you want an ssd that is nearly as reliable and way cheaper go sandisk

Hahaha of course you do :D

Enough with the CAPITALS, I can zoom in myself if I have difficulties reading posts thanks.

And try because the Intel's are the most reliable SSDs in the world, whereas the SanDisks are made cheaply, and therefore less reliable.

Oh, I missed that bottom line actually...

He does image manipulation as a paying job, and a hobby.

And can you please show me anywhere that shows that with windows 7 x64, that NOTHING except image manip, movie rendering, (or VM building) will not show ANY performance gains, as I'd really love to see it !

You don't have to put it in capitals mate, I can still see that it says nothing and any. And I dont quite get the question, will not show any performance gains from what?

Ok, I'll rephrase, apart from the listed tasks, can anyone please show me proof that 16GB of ram will not show any performance gains over 8gb?

I'd really like to see that.

And I'm not being sarcastic, I really would !

That obviously only speaks for games, but I'm unsure of what else you'd like me to show you?

All we said was that in games anything over 8gb will not do anything

I've just explained to you why it happens?
If you're that in doubt, run all your programs with task manager open to document RAM usage. Also run your programs with 16gb and 8gb and record frame rates.

Ok, as I sit here, with a few things running, (nothing excessive).

hardware reserved: 51MB
In Use: 7GB
Cached: 12Gb

and thats out of 32Gb.

Made me lol.

Especially about the cache, as thats where windows decides; 'hmm, this person has way too much unused RAM...lets try and find a use for it' and so saves every keystroke to do to that memory...no reason whatsoever for doing it...boredom would be my guess...

Which leaves us with the RAM usage, which I would guess is most likely BS as running IBT doesnt get up to that much on the highest level off stressing... (thats a stress test program for overclocks btw - just thought I'd mention that before you start saying; aha! you've said a program that uses more Ram... )

Anyway, even if that is true, that still proves my point that it is not using over 8gb...

Ok, currently running:

Firefox (2 flash games), Chrome, TS3, Utorrent, Peerblocker, MSN messenger, WL Mail, Arma2 Rcon x2 (2 different servers I admin)

and yes, I know MSN msgr and WL mail are clunky, but they do what I need... :D

And thats the background stuff that I tend to have open when gaming.

If I load up, say BF3.. then on a system with 8gb, all of a sudden, there is memory contention, and stuff getting paged, which will slow things down, as there is only 8gb total memory available...

Say whatever you want but nearly everyone would tell you that for general usage and gaming 8gb is more than fine, personally for me 4gb is currently fine

And I'm not trying to tell you that you need more!

But please dont try and tell me I need less !!

Also, I know what IBT is, personally, I prefer OCCT... but hey, personal preferences are just that :)

We never tried to tell you need less what we said was that for general usage and gaming there is no need for more than 8gb

You're running 2 game servers and class that as 'not excessive usage' when most game servers are run by dedicated machines?

As Seuman said, we told you that for normal usage you dont need more than 8gb. You can't class game servers as normal usage, especially not running two of them.

Try actually running your rig with normal programs open and see what happens. Even so - BF3 maxes 4gb of RAM, so for your rig 32gb of RAM is still huge overkill if the programs you use will only use 11gb. Whatever you say, that earns a foot wide noob badge in my eyes.

It's also very easy to increase any RAM usage if you want to. You side-stepped the CPU side of it where you cant just make up figures or lie about how many cores are in use.
