So after buying this card used I was unpleasantly surprised with the noise it made in idle mode. I figured I could just set a custom fan curve, but it wouldn't help. After some research I found out the fan won't go below 40% due to a vbios lock.
I then contacted EVGA if there was anything they could do, or if there was an updated bios available, but honestly their tech support couldn't be arsed with me and suggested that I'd 'Take a look at their new 970 and 980 cards'. Yeah, cause after buying a used card for €160 I'm clearly going to trade up for that...
I decided to fire up GPU-Z, make a .rom file of my vbios, save one backup and then make a new one. In the new one I changed nothing but setting the minimum fanspeed from 43% to 31%.
I've had the bios files on my desktop for months now but couldn't figure out nvFlash and honestly I was afraid I'd brick the card. Today I finally took the plunge and modded the vbios on my GTX 760 SC with some help from TPC, thanks mate
Started making the bootable USB with the HP tool, bla bla bla, booted into DOS. Here we go:
Pressing enter means point of no return... or is it?
Woops, I swear I have a 760 in there! Apparently it was an older version of nvFlash that didn't recognize my card yet. Booted into Windows, updated the version of nvFlash on the USB and tried again. This time with a better result.
Y it is then, must admit my fingers were a tad sweaty at this point...
In suspence I clicked Enter on accident and had to start over
Whooooo FINALLY THAT'S THAT.
After looking up how to actually restart DOS... I booted back into Windows... Doesn't seem quieter yet?
Well, that's a real shame. Apparently the fan might have its own little bios that is locked too. Thanks EVGA, you really screwed me over here. I spent so much time researching and money buying quiet components and you toss it all out the window with your shit bios.
Safe to say I'll probably be switching videocards when money allows it and not going EVGA again.
