Best Gaming headset

hi all,

so i was wondering if i can get any suggestions here for some great gaming headset, mainly a headset that has a mic attached to it.

also, any recommendations for a sound card would be appreciated.

Thanks :wavey:

Sennheiser PC151's. Real comfy headphones and great bass/sound quality. Best £30~ I ever spent. It has a mic too and volume control and mic switch on the cable.

Seinnheiser PC350s, if money isn't a problem and you really want the best. Although anything made by Seinnheiser is worth the money.

Soundcard. Hmmm. Depends if you are a total anti-Creative person, in which case a Xonar. But an X-FI can't be beaten if you don't mind hunting for drivers and aren't planning to use Win7. The cynic in me says that Creative wont officially support X-FI with Win7 and will produce a new card to cover it.

I can attest to the sound qualities of the PC350"s. The headphones are amazing even with my onboard audio on this rig.

For my new build, I am looking at the ASUS Xonar D2/PM Sound card. I understand that the card is one of the best all around cards out there.

I use Razer barracuda's myself, they are weird... not the comfi-est but the surround sound they produce is really good, and the bass is good if you tweak it, sounds poop out the box, but then the soundcard and headset costs £140 which is a bit much

Do you really notice the surround though? Really?

I thought that as they were so close to your ears you couldn't tell.

I can, though obviously something dead behind me/infront is not as good as full blown speakers, it is weird, hard to explain, but yes it does give the impression of 360o sound, really useful in shooters when you can actually hear EXACTLY where someone is creeping up on you :D

I have to agree with GavX

I find my surround sound headphones

I particilly like these for the hub because of the feature which allows me to switch between 5.1 speakers and 5.1 headset at the touch of a button.

A huge advantage in 1st person shooters, TBH I would be lost without them.

I'm crap enough as it is without loseing the edge this gives me!

I have often been accused of being a hack/ cheat because i have got a kill by wall spamming some one or sending them a cooked grenade, when there was no way I had seen them!

They are infact correct i did not see them I heard them and my surround sound gave me a good clue asto where exactly!

I have my medusas for ages. I'm on my 2nd pair since and I've always sworn by them. I felt they gave me the edge in CSS and people think I'm wallhacking!

I've been moving my pc about recently (into the living room for a bit and then moved it back) and I just think all the cables along with the hub is such a pain - it makes such a mess with the cables.

Are the seinheisers just 1 jack, plug into the pc and go?

Did you know they also do a USB version:) no hub.

I have these for gaming on my laptop.

I had those exact Medusas from Scan before! The mic was awful though. I didn't notice much difference from just normal stereo to surround 5.1 headphones though, but the headphones do make a difference like Gav said. For some reason footsteps are more recognizable. I remember when I first started playing Americas Army everyone was banging on about headphones and I was like pfff I got speakers that's all I need. When I tried headphones I could hear so many things you just can't hear on speakers! It's weird isn't it.

Sennheisers are usually 2 jacks (audio and mic) and I'm not sure if they have a USB one. The USB one uses a small onboard sound processor which is usually inferior to the ones you might already have but I suppose in game it doesn't really matter about the sound quality right?

Ah yes, people accusing of wallhacking... me and my mate would play CSS, he had crappy headphones and if I died I just scoped him and was his ears, I actaully managed to tell him not only where someone was, but what gun they had :D (reloading maverick is very distinctive :D). Think he was also accused of hacking for that

I've had several surround headpyhones and whilst they do help a little, they're not superb.

I will stick with my Sennheiser HD555's thanks :)

Man I am so glad to find this thread,... kinda sad it's so dated though.

I need a little feedback and advice. After a lot of research on my own, I'm still stuck in the mud. I have in my possession now two fairly recently released headsets and less than 10 days remaining of a 30 day return window on one of these sets. Can't afford both. After doing a lot of reading, I first bought the Logitech G35. The sound quality on these things are outstanding,... they do quite well with music and gameplay (I play COD most). They're not so bright when it comes to movies though,... a serious problem with volume and I just wasn't convinced that the surround experience coming from the Dolby software driver was as good as I could get for the money. About a week later I went out and bought Tritton's AXPC Pro 5.1, thinking they would sound just as good with music and gameplay as the G35, but would also give me the surround experience more inline with my initial expectations. The plan was to A and B them for a couple days and return the set that lost the battle to win my ears. Not so easy! They both have their pros and they both have their cons. The AXPC Pro set just doesn't have that fat sound that comes out of the G35s when playing back CDs and MP3 files,... in fact, I'd even go so far as to say the AXPC Pro's sound is a little thin. When used for game play, the differences between the two are a lot less obvious, still the separation and sound positioning seems sharper with the Trittons. The multiple drivers for front, center and rear does make a difference in this department, but that's only one ingredient to the pie.

Now here's were I could use some advice and edumacation with this stuff. Now I've read that multi-driver headsets need lots of tweaking before they begin to sound off. But I may not have that kinda time unless I resign myself to owning two hundred dollar headsets. Not. I've also read that it's much easier for software drivers to do virtual surround than decoding discrete surround, and therefore the USB multi-driver headset (Tritton AXPC Pro 5.1) is a flawed design from square one. Reading this lead me to think that Tritton's line of headsets might be a better option if it weren't for the USB approach. (A quick note on 'USB for me'. My platform is a laptop,... a pretty strong laptop, but nonetheless a laptop, which rules out a sound card.) Am I correct in suspecting that the AXPC Pro 5.1 will not sound like the other two Tritton models just based on being USB? If I had more confidence in that suspicion, I would consider biting down a little and make the jump to the Tritton AX Pro. They're only about 40 bucks more than I paid for the Logitech G35s. From what I understand, they're fed by hardware decoding that's housed in the included audio controller,... and if I understand correctly, it's like having an external sound card. The only down side is, I've read that the AX Pro won't except input from nothing less than an Optical output. That's fine for the Xbox 360 and for watching HD TV and movies, but not for my laptop. However, I'm sure I could get my hands on a fiber optic enabled dock from my school's IT. Is the difference between these two approaches, software decoding and drivers vs hardware decoding wide enough to basically classify the AXPC Pro as a whole nother animal from the AX 5.1 PRo and the AX Pro? Or is it more accurate to say that if you've heard one Tritton Pro series headset, you've heard them all?

Hey guys,... thanks for any advice, help or education in this stuff. Much appreciated!

Hay, Iv got the Tritton headset and with a good soundcard, well its just amazing. There a bit expensive though thats the only problem. You can also plug it into xbox 360 and use the microphone that comes with it ( Also really clear microphone )

Which Tritton's do you have? Yeah,... they do sound good don't they. But the ones I have,... the USB AXPC's just don't quite match the fullness of the Logitech G35. I'm thinking it's because they're USB and that forces them to rely on software surround processing.

Yeah the whole Xbox thing is an added bonus and helps to justify adding 30 or so bucks on top of what I've already dropped onto the G35's. But I do most of my gaming on the PC,... but that might change once the Halo hits the streets. When is that BTW? If I do that, I will also have 5.1 capabilities at the head for the home theater system as well,... another bonus over these two USB units I'm trying to decide between. But I'll still be faced with how to interface the Trittons with my laptop. HP makes a docking system that has an optical out, but I'm concern how that will increase the laptop's footprint.

The mic on the USB Trittons I'm using now is great, you're right about that. Doesn't seem to have any sound cancellation circuitry though. I've been told it picks up the TV and other room noises

Oh sorry,... didn't see your link at the bottom of your post. That's model I'm thnking of swapping the Logitech G35's for. Right now, I'm using it's USB sibling,... the Tritton AXPC Pro 5.1.

i use sennheiser HD590's and they are better then any of the "Gaming headsets" apart from the PC530's which are based on Hi-Fi headphones

i have used medusa's and the razer set and they have allways broken, though i cant comment on Tritton as i havent ever used any of there headsets

I use the older Tritton headset. The blue version before the latest model revision.

They are ok headphones with good surround sound but I always suffered from a fair bit of background hiss and popping.

I do like the fact i can run the headset through either :

The decoder using optical

The decoder using spd

Using the adapter to plug the headset straight into the 4 3.5mm jacks if you chose.

Are the latest AXPRO's good enough to warrant the cost.

Well I returned the Tritton AXPC Pro today on my lunch break. They just didn't sound that good to me,... now that's prolly because I didn't take the time to understand how to set them up and discover tweaks. Almost every review I've read about them say their sound is awesome, but these USB Trittons just didn't live up to that sentiment. So I'm left with only the Logitech G35 for now. I plan on ordering the AX Pro tonight from Walmart on-line. They're letting them go for $149 dead,... I guess they forgot the 99 cents part. I'm just hoping their aural performance will be more in line with the reviews I've read. Maybe letting go of feeding through a USB port might make that happen. I think that will be the true test if the AX Pro's are worth the added cost. I paid about $125 including tax for the Logitech G35, so I'm looking at maybe another 30-35 bucks after shipping.

But here's something interesting I learned today. Turtle Beach has out a replacement for their EarForce X4's,... the X41's. According to the box, they let go of the IR tether to the transmitter and has gone RF, AND, they're more PC friendly than the X4's. Don't know how they did that though,... maybe a a small USB transmitter is included in the box something like Plantronic's 995 model. But the Blue Shirt at BB said they just hit the shelf yesterday and doubts drop from their $199 price tag any time soon. They did lower the price of their remaining X4 inventory to $139. But I've read some not so glowing reviews on them, and interfacing a laptop to them just ain't gonna happen. Still an interesting product. But we'll see what these AX Pros will do when they arrive in the next 2-3 days.
