that's right, i want to build an htpc for ripping dvd's and online chat (i would like gaming capabilities for when friends come over).

i figured 1gb is fine, if not i can go w/ 2gb, but i gotta know wat to get. not sure how much i want to spend, but about 1100 usd is gonna be my max for the whole system including windows(no monitor or sound card/speakers).

wat do u guys suggest? :p

there would be no point in going for 2 gb it would make it slower rather than faster denser ram modules are slower

4x512 is wat i was thinking of, but still.. best ddrII that fits a budget?

Not a bad price. I'd rather have some G.Skill LE's (TCCD) and whoop teh junk out of them...but you have junky DDR2 ;) :(

ddrII is faster than ddrI in terms of bandwidth.. that's a good thing for dvd ripping. it's not junky :noobsign:

OCZ do a good line in DDR II - give them a go. I think the gold stuff pretty good. Unsure of any other makes.

|3ourne - where are you??

I know he reccomends ocz eb, but i don't see it in 2x512 (only 1gb), and even so i don't wish to spend that much on ram :o

Try two modules of this http://www.atacom.com/program/print...RCH_ALL&Item_code=MED2_OCZT_42_C9&USER_ID=www

That ram will easily do around DDR640 or so with nice tight timings , and still go higher.

Or you can try two modules of this

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820161403

Ballistix = micron chips meaning nice bandwidths with relatively tight timings.

Or some Patriot XBL series

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820220054

http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=83719

Again micron modules .

Another nice alternative
