Bent pins...

Hi, I have 2 bent pins on my evga 680I Lt, I just noticed them while installing a scyth cpu cooler. I really need to know if there is a way to fix them. I have a picture of the socket below, its really blurry, but you can make out what doesnt blend in, really want to get this fixed! Looking for any fixes for this. And yes the computer still boots, but i just dont like knowing my computer is running with 2 bent pins. If you need more details ask, my computer is just laying on the table intill i can either get the board replaced or intill i can bend them back if possible.

when i was given a cpu with bent pins (quite a few rows worth) i used a mechanical pencil (take the lead out and it has a nice little hole) and a ruler to straighten them. Worked for me, but dont bend them too much else they will snap.

yeh, there is no way i can bend the pins back, i mean i cant even get the pin to move, going to contact newegg about a rma tomorow

DO NOT TOUCH THAT MOTHERBOARD

Seriously the moment you fiddle with it is the moment they can refuse a RMA.

I would just RMA it as you don't know if anything else is wrong with it and get a new perfect one delivered.

Pain in the butt I understand when your all eager to install and get going but heh thats life.

How long have you had the motherboard? If you just bought it and it came with the pins like that, then you can RMA it. If you bent the pins, they will not accept an RMA.

However, they have no way of knowing if it was you or not. ;)

So do this:

1. Take a picture of the entire motherboard and another picture of the CPU socket.

2. If you haven't already done so and it hasn't been more than 30 days since you bought it, register the board here http://evga.com/register/default.asp

3. Submit if for an RMA here: http://evga.com/community/myProducts.asp

4. Include the pictures taken earlier with the RMA. And make sure to mention that the board came like that.

I read the Evga forums like a hawk and I have seen a lot of stories about rejected RMA's for motherboards with bent pins, and if you say it was you who did it, there's no way in hell they're accepting it. So best of luck.

RMA the board. The Socket itself is warranted for 20 insertions, but if you break one of the pins trying to straighten them...kiss the warranty goodbye

There was no way I could have bent the pins, I was extremely careful placing the cpu in. I am now back on the 945P. The board is about 20-30 days old, if newegg wont exept rma i go through evga. Its one of those things were I am in such a hurry to do things i just dont notice i guess. But could the bent pins explain the extremely high load temps of 70c at stock speeds?

Good luck mate. I've had first hand dealings with the same thing and manufacturers seem to point blank refuse an RMA on a board with bent LGA pins.

Unless it looks like a manufacturing fault, they are going to try their hardest to put the blame on you.

Yeah agreed, it is extremely hard to prove. I too have heard that EVGA aren't the easiest to deal with unless the issue is cut and dry. They could at least do it as a display of customer relations to ensure end-user satisfaction...but I guess we'll have to see. Best of luck mate :)

Well after looking at the motherboard last night, I decided to bend the pins back. Go ahead call me dumb if you would like, but they would probably say there is no way you could miss that blah blah blah...so took a needle with a loop around the end of it and bent the pins back slowely without breaking them... Dumb move on my part should've rma'd to get a new board, but that pick doesnt prove I didn't bend the pins. :(

I would have tried bending them back myself, as I have had experience with bent pins before. The danger is that they may be not only bent, but fractured and that is when they break when you try to fix it. I accidentally bent 15-20 pins on my X2 4600+ a few weeks ago, when I had it out of its socket for a new heaksink/fan installation (long story). I dropped the CPU on to the motherboard and it landed hard pin-side down. I was able to bend all of the pins back, although I felt that some of them were close to breaking. It seems to be working fine.

Nice one mate, you should be fine. I bent some pins on a rather 4expensive motherboard a while ago. I got a pin and reseated them so it was all ok :p

Sounds like u guyz have had a great escape.

It all really depends which pins are bent, as of course this leads to how important they are, and their degree of `criticalness`.

I`d really h8 any1 to lull themselves in a false sense of security thinking u can be that much careless with u`r cpu/chips "cos it`ll be ok I can bend stuff back - it`s worked for other people".

Some pins are more important than others. A good selection of the pins are simply redundant, some are duplicated like gnds. Each bending back of a pin causes two fractures. One for the initial bend, and the other when u bend it back. If they`re too opposite each other, the pin will come away.

Also having a fractured pin on a signal specific line can reduce the cpu to an ice hockey puck.

So as DaWolf said in my 2nd Pulp Fiction quote of the day "Be careful u crazy kids".

Fancy trying to sort this poor fella out?

Ouchio.

If only the cpu was that big. Atleast two of those look too obtuse >.<

Somebody somewhere would replace the pins. Damn sure I wouldn`t firstly have the patients or 2ndly have thin enough fingers.

If the rain carries on tho, u`d be supprized what people will try.
