Autobahn appreciation

Lol I want to cry inside :( Here most somewhat straight roads we have, either have a speed camera set at 60km/h (37mph), or have speed bumps every 2 metres or are in such a bad state that you'd risk leaving a tyre (or two) behind in one of the holes. The national speed limit is 80km/h (49) mph, so legally, no one would need a car that does more than 50mph.

do you guys even have highways on that little island

You wouldn't want to come to Australia to drive then our max is 110kph and most suburbs are 50kph so for a whopping big country it takes fooorrreeevveerr to get around it LOL!
I'll actually be doing quite a bit of driving in Australia later this year again in a rental car. Mainly around Adelaide, but I might do a drive between Adelaide and Sydney, I'm on the fence whether I'll fly there or not yet.

The car is only a Hyundai i20 though, I wanted something small for the cities.

Longest single straight road is not longer than 5km for sure, if you can call that a highway :P at night covered in about 1 minute
Not much good at testing the top speed then. :p

plus we don't even have a race track, there are a ton of car fans and modders on this little island and the government won't even give a thought to getting a proper race track to get the speeding off the street. We only have a 1/4 mile track, which is basically a joke...

Careful what you wish for there. ;)

If your government go away and build one for you, it's going to be you ie. the Maltese taxpayers that'll be saddled with a bill for a few €100m or probably closer to €1bn knowing how good government operations are at going massively over budget.

Yea racetracks are pretty darn expensive, i didn't expect them to cost ~$1bn.
I have a racetrack pretty much right around the corner, unfortunately you are only allowed to follow some other car around the track though, at least if you don't pay a shitload of money.

Autobahns must be fun but i'm glad we don't have them in England, it's getting far too difficult to trust other motorists not to be total dicks. I hate the fact the government tried to stop people 'hogging' the middle lane by stating something they can never enforce. Now when your cruising at ~80 just passing the trucks a monumental penis comes along at 85 and cuts across 3 lanes because you didn't go into the gap between every truck. If the road is empty and people can pass freely in the outside lane I can't see a problem with cruising in the middle. Surely its annoying for truckers to have cars constantly appear from directly behind them and drive through their blind spot. Anyway I could rant about UK roads all day.

If nothing else i'm glad that the Autobahns mean we can all buy German cars that cruise so effortlessly at 90-100 mph. I can't say i've ever driven 'that' fast myself probably only 110mph and to be honest everything seems fine and not that scary at all, it's when you get off and find your still doing 80 on the slip road inches before a roundabout the poo starts coming out.

I cannot stand people that sit in the middle lane when not overtaking, it's just lazy IMO. If I want to overtake a slower car that's in the middle and I'm on the inside lane, that means that I have to move all the way to the outside lane to overtake because they couldn't be bothered to move into the inside lane.

I agree with both sentiments to an extent except in the circumstance where those in the middle lane are going much faster than the inside. If your cruising at 80 there is no point constantly moving into the inside lane inbetween every truck or car. If there was a truck doing 60, a car doing 80 and another doing 85 all gaining on each other it would make no sense for them all to be in the same lane. Why not spread across all three and eliminate any potential to cut each other up or make somebody else slow down. Obviously in heavy traffic or where there is only a small difference in speed it makes less sense but I don't see why on a quiet motorway stretch everybody should pile into one lane, that's just irritating and makes it more difficult for people to merge or see in some circumstances such as heavy rain.

If the gap between cars in the inside lane is too short then yeah it's not worth it but the majority of time it makes more sense to move in, even if you have to overtake a lorry 500yds down the road. Why? Because it reduces the chance of me having to slow down because someone is creeping up on my right hand side, if they were behind me I know I would be safe to pull out in which case they could then easily follow.
