Go with the PCIe one, it will fit in more slots in case you want to move it in the future. also newer motherboards are going away from PCI. They both have headphone amps so you should get crisp amazing sound through either of them.

How many graphics cards are you using with how many monitors?

Reason I ask is that if your using two with them in CF/SLI then there going to drop to x16/x8 when you use a PCI-E sound card which if your using a multiple monitor setup may effect the performance, or so I hear.

If you go for the PCI version then you'll keep running at x16/x16.

Just something you may want to consider.

Edit: KoS is right about how we're starting to move away from PCI though so the PCI-E version should last you longer, or at least not limit you as we might see PCI slots on budget boards for some time yet.

Asus Essence ST and STX are not entirely the same cards. The ST has a better sound because it has less jitter than the STX. In addition, it can evolve with this. The STX can not do.

at the moment im using a laptop so in month or so im planing to build a gaming rig

i will be using single monitor wont be going cf/sli one graphics card and one sound card

and i want to keep the sound card as far apart from the graphics card so that the graphics card can breathe well

can you use pci-e x1 in pci slot

I don't think you'll be able to use the x1 PCI-E slot because of it being so close to the heatsink that the card wouldn't fit in.

My original comment though isn't relevant to you as you'll only be using one graphics card so you could use the top PCI-E slot for your graphics card and then either the bottom PCI or PCI-E slot and then your graphics card would have plenty of clearance.

ok so ill go for the Asus Xonar Essence STX PCI-E and put it in the bottom pci-e

and the graphics card will still run at 16x?

thanks so much for the help you guys have given me really appreciate it ill keep you guys up dated when i start the build

I am not convinced that this is a good choice. The excellent reputation of this sound card is based on these qualities in use headphones. If you want to take a Corsair kit, its only advantage you will not be of any use ....

I must admit that this is the sound setup I've had in mind after seeing Tom's review of the SP2500.
