ASUS Replaced my GTX670 with a GTX580...

Well I'm pissed.

A couple weeks ago I decided to RMA my GTX670 since a problem I thought I had with my motherboard was actually my graphics card's fault. Everything went fine and dandy for the RMA, I got my RMA number on October 29th, and sent my card out, an ASUS GTX670, on November 12th. I was a little worried for a while because I couldn't find my card's status using the ASUS RMA Status thing, but I still received an email on November 27th saying they had shipped my card out to me. This is where the trouble started.

On the email, it said they had shipped me out one of their DC2 GTX580's. Not only is this card not what I payed for, but it is significantly worse performing than the GTX670. I sent them an email right after I got their email saying generally, if a GTX580 shows up on my door, we're going to have a problem. No response.

Lo and behold, I get a box from ASUS today and inside is a GTX580. I haven't opened the packaging to see it's condition nor am I going to. I've already emailed ASUS saying this is completely ridiculous and I want to know how I can get this 580 back and my 670 back at their expense. As you can imagine, I am extremely upset because now I'm going to have to wait at least another two weeks before I finally get my rig back to full capacity.

TL;DR: I sent ASUS a GTX670, they sent me back a GTX580, I'm mad.

Has anything like this ever happened to anyone else? Gotta say I'm really starting to doubt ASUS as a company, I have a tablet made by them and I've had nothing but trouble from that. Needless to say I'm going to try and stick with other brands from now on.

There must be a reason for the switch surely? That seems silly. I know some companies have an 'equal performance or better' but sending you a lower gen card seems daft.

Are 580's really that much worse than 670's ?

Man, that really sucks! Especially from a big company like ASUS they should be ashamed ! I mean you paid for a 670 so you should get a 670 back.

If they wanted to send you a older model then they should have given you a new 680 :p same gpu ,more or less, inside after all as your 670. Sending you old tech back they should be ashamed.

I know I'd want my 670 back at least if I had one, give them what for.

They're definitely not as good...

It seems such a random thing to do.
How old was the 670? I'm sure they'll start it, otherwise I'm sure you'll have the US equivalent of the Office of Fair Trading on your side

Hmm I'd get em on the blower if I were you, pretty poor to send a product that is worse ?

What was up with the card?

Bought the 670 in June of this year, so it's less than 6 months old. I'm not worried that I'll be stuck with the 580, I'm more upset by the fact that I have to wait another couple weeks because they screwed up.

Oh believe me they'll be getting a call as soon as I have the time, I just wanna see if they reply to my email first. The card had this weird issue where sometimes it wouldn't be detected at startup so I'd have to reset the computer a ton of times until it did get detected, then everything worked great once the computer was up and running. At first this sounded like a mobo problem to me, but I RMA's my board and it still was happening, so the GPU was the only other suspect.

I had a barebones server from ASUS 5 or so years back. The Opteron CPU I bought for it was on their supported CPU list. However, when everything arrived, the system would not boot. Problem was that the BIOS did not support the CPU and I needed to update it. Unfortunately I couldn't without a working CPU.

ASUS wanted me to ship them the whole server. Shipping would have been around $70 due to the weight and size. I ended up complaining over and over and finally they agreed to just ship me a new BIOS chip with the correct BIOS version on it.

Basically, ASUS is horrible to deal with from a support standpoint, but you will get what you're after eventually, it'll just take some time. I can't believe they'd have the nerve to ship you a card from a previous generation, especially one that is arguably slower, hotter, and louder.

PapaSmurf , I'd be pissed to , I would have thought Asus would have better customer service than that. Hopefully they get it figured out soon ,send you a GTX670(like you sent them) and pay shipping both ways .
This is a nightmare I wouldn't wish on anyone.

That's just mad! How possibly they could be so stupid to sent you 580! Hope that they give you something extra for free for this what have they done!
I sent my new HIS 7970 on RMA back to OCuk and they did job fast and properly:) So I got full refund, as I don't wont this HIS 7970 back due to blue PCB.

Yeah I would've loved to just send it back to Newegg, they're always awesome when it comes to refunds/exchanges. I was just way outside the thirty day period they give you, so I had to take the hard route.

That sucks... I always return my card to the retailer i bought it from, even when I get a little piece of paper that says "return to us instead of your retailer!". Mostly because I don't have to ship to wherever the F the company is located.

That way you also avoid horrible customer service, assuming you bought your stuff from a place with good customer service.

Me too depending on how old the product is.

In the UK, retailers only have to give you a partial if the product is over 6 months old. Manufacturers on the other hand should either repair or replace the product.
This shouldn't happen though.

Papasmurf - you could always say you have 670 SLI and therefore a 580 is no good for you?

So that´s the BAD side from Asus ,
i guess they all have something weird ?!

Sorry to hear about your problems mate :(

tough break!
i threatened to report the to trading standards and take legal action when they said that if i Rma my design faulted V1 HD 7950 i will not get the revised V2 card back.
They are now playing ball ;)

Well, no sense in letting a perfectly good 580 just sit around. While I wait and see what ASUS does, I might as well put it to use. Planetside 2 here I come!

By the way, these triple slot cards are absolutely HUGE! I don't think I'd ever get a card past a dual slot now that I see this monster.
