Asus motherboard thoughts & info

Hi all, I'm new here and trying to get info .I'm wanting to build my first system and want your thoughts or past experience with Asus motherboards. I do some gaming (Half life 2 and other steam games), do some photography and browse the web . Thinking about the Asus P8 Z77-V Pro with an i7 - 3770k or 2600k. I'm thinking sometime in the future overclocking the cpu , so maybe the Corsair H 100 for now , then in the future go for a true water cooling loop for the cpu.
What do you all think?

Asus boards are solid performers however have you considered the msi gd 65? It is cheaper and outperforms the Asus board you are looking at. At the end of the day it doesn't really matter which one you chose because you won't see a performance difference. If it was me I would go for the msi board as its cheaper!

Check out the reviews on oc3d on the two boards. That may help you make your mind up. Let me know what you decide.

I love my P8Z77-v deluxe.

However, if I were buying again now, I'd choose one of the MSI ranges (GD65 or mPower) For your needs though, it will be absolutely fine.

Anything from MSI or Asus for Z77 is absolutely fine - I wouldn't stray too far away from those.

Im a really big fan of Asus motherboards and think theyre the best on the market. They always seem to be reviewed and rated very highly. Ive had a few and theyve all been rock solid. Got one that still works from 2001 despite being hammered on pretty good!

As for cooling, if youre eventually going into a custom loop then I wouldnt drop $120 on a H100 really. You can get a Noctua D14 for $80, have the same level of cooling and none of the noise. Thatll save ya a few bucks and then you can go all out when you do your custom loop.

Thats not to say the H100 (or the newly released H100i which is supposed to be better and quieter) is a bad idea. Theyre excellent coolers and Id love to have one. They dont take up a ton of room in your case and you wont have this 40 pound chunk of metal hanging from your motherboard. But just for something semi-temporary til you move on to a better setup, I think the D14 would be a little better choice.

welcome to the forums,

great description on your needs. the pro has a similar power phase as the MSI
GD55, it is robust in connectivity (sorry JJ) and priced as well for a lot of
features with the support to back it up. the MSI GD55/65/MPower are leaping
into the Z77 market with a "no-frills" approach with just power management
and connectitity. so the cost doesn't hurt the pocket as hard for similar uses.

first-time users can easily benefit the MSI boards with the easy clocking methods
and when ready, can easily increase performance with their overclocking skills.

usually, price can be an issue. and where you can save, you can always use else
where in the build. better PSU, SSD or GPU.

Thank you all for the feedback , I have read other posts of some talking about the msi boards you mentioned and will look at them to compare features and colors.
The cooler I was looking at was the H100i , I've heard the fans are much better and quieter than on the standard H100 but will also look at the D14 too.
I've also heard that the i7 3770k runs hot when overclocked so I'm not sure if I'm going with that or the 2600k.

But thanks all , I really appreciate the feedback.

All processors will run hot when overclocked. I think youd be better off with the 3770K. Might as well get the latest stuff when you can.

The H100i is supposed to be better performing and have quieter fans and pump than the H100 with better software and all that but as of yet, there arent any reviews out so there's no way to know yet for sure. Supposedly they sent the review samples out the same time they did the retail samples so it may take a day or two more before they start popping up. Id definitely wait on them before buying one.

Who is a popular retailer here on the forum? I don't think I want to deal with newegg, I had an expensive lesson learned with a return. I've been looking on Amazon for what they have. Are there any better to deal with?

Newegg is still my favorite. Ive spent THOUSANDS of dollars with them as I suffer from severe chronic upgradeitus and Ive never had anything but great service and experiences with them.

Directron, NCIX and Tiger Direct would all be places Id trust to do business with.

I guess as long as you don't have to return anything newegg is fine. I ordered a Cyberpower UPS at $150, they sent it from Tenn. and to return it I had to pay shipping to California. Return shipping and restocking fee came to almost $75.

OK , I'm done reading reviews for a while. I've been on newegg and amazon. The msi gd-65 & MPower get pretty good, reviews but all the Asus Z-77 boards didn't get good reviews at all. Some of these people that do these reviews don't sound like they know what their doing. Some not updating the Bios and some not putting memory in the right slot. I'm done for now , will read more tomorrow.
Again Thank you all for the feedback.

Thats why I buy locally. No shipping fees. If there's a problem you can easily return the product with minimal hassles.

Well after reading a bunch of reviews , I'm thinking about the MSI Z77A-GD65.
A few reviewers were having trouble getting the Marvell controller working on the asus boards. I'm still not sure if I'm going with the 3770k , 3570k or the 2600k yet, probably the 3770k. If I use the D14 cooler I'm pretty sure I'll have to use low profile memory.
I thought about using the Corsair AX 850 power supply , but after reading the forums here that's overkill. So I still need to rethink a few things yet. It might be after the first of the year before I'm ready to build.
I want to thank LiamTheBoss , JamesRiley94 , MacLeod , airdeano and CPMFW for their input with the msi board.

what PC case are you leaning towards?
with the new H100i alrady being sold by newegg.. might be another review to
watch for, as well.
this will allow any memory to be used with no limitations. as for the bridge architecture
speed is what they like. 1866 and with falling RAM prices the 2133 would be the charm.

I haven't purchased it yet , but I've decided on the Corsair 650D. The H100i is still very new , but is something I'm looking at. Was also considering the Corair ax760i power supply and Dominator Platinum 2x8gb 2400 C10 ram. I will have to see how much money I can come up with. I already have windows 7 ultimate 64 bit and some Noctua NT-H1 compound and a Sound Blaster recon 3d sound card.

Also keep an eye on H100 sales. They'll be trying to clear them out to make room for the new line. I picked one you for $100 and its fantastic. Its not as quiet as the air coolers like the D14 but it performs great! Make sure you get one with a lot number starting with 1227 and up and you'll increase your odds of getting one with a nice silent pump.

Thank you for the info on the H100 MacLeod , But I may just wait for more reviews on the H100i. Maybe Mr. Tom can get his hands on one and do his normal in depth and honest review. I also would like to see a good review on the AX760i psu. By then maybe the prices will drop a little.

I guess I need to start another thread since I'm not talking about Asus motherboards anymore. Any suggestions on where to start a new thread?
