Hey guys,

I've just gotten myself a asus maximus extreme X38 mobo and i want to make the following RAID array(s):

1. Programs + Windows Drive - 500gb (32mb cache - new hdd)

2. Movies + Games Drive - 500gb RAID 0

3. 500gb RAID 0 with above drive

4. 500gb RAID 1 of #1

5. 500gb RAID 1 of #2

6. 500gb RAID 1 of #3

Can the Asus Maximus actually allow me to do that or would i need to get a seperate RAID card?

thx

For #5 #6, do you mean #2 #3 rather than #3 #4?

lol, better recheck this..........yup ur right - thx!:

2. Movies + Games Drive - 500gb RAID 0

3. 500gb RAID 0 with above drive

4. 500gb RAID 1 of #1

5. 500gb RAID 1 of #2

6. 500gb RAID 1 of #3

thx for the heads up! :P - its gettin wayyyy too late

meh either way :P

so does any1 know wether this is possible on the maximus? As i've never used RAID before, i'm not sure quite how it works on mobo, wether it will only allow 1x of an array or 2/3 etc

 Your post is hurting my brain.

Can you just confirm how many physical hard disks you have and what their sizes are.

At first glance I'd say you're best with a RAID5 array, but it all depends on how many disks you have (and if they're all the same)

Unfortunatly RAID5 is slower than RAID 1 from what i've seen, also I don't think my system is viable for it ATM.

I'll be Having 6 Physical HDDs, all 500gb

in the System there will only be 2 Logical HDDs.

C: (Main Drive)

2x 500gb: 2x in RAID 1

G: (Backup)

4x 500gb: 2x in RAID 0 and 2x in RAID 1. (RAID 0+1)

I'm still slightly confused. Are you wanting to RAID a set of disks that are already RAID'ed? If so, to the best of my knowledge that cannot be done - most definitely not on an ICH9R raid controller and probably not on any controller.

Personally I'd go for one big RAID5 array and then partition it to my requirements. But you may also want to look into using RAID1 for your main drive array and RAID0+1 for your Backup.

aye - thats what im thinking of doing.

basically brand new system, and I will be RAIDing them for the first time.

RAID 1 for system, raid 0+1 for backup.

I just wasn't sure wether the motherboard would be able to accomodate 3 arrays at once.

Buy a decent RAID card mate, that's the long and the short of it really

Yes the mobo could perhaps do that but nothing beats a hardware RAID array that allows you to transport RAID arrays

Yea like kemp said you really want a RAID card. I personally wouldnt go for that setup, would be a bit of a waste of 500gb drives. I would use two smaller drives in RAID 0 for the OS and apps, a 500gb RAID 1 array (two 500gb drives) and then the rest as regular storage drives. Anything important you put on your raid 1 array and any general storage on the single drives. Two 80gb drives in RAID 0 will be more than enough for any windows OS and Apps.
