Asus maximus Gene-Z 1155 m-ATX

Built a new system today and i cant update to the newest or second newest bios version. I extract it like i always do. It says that this isnt a efi bios file. Any suggestions?

I did update a asus pro 1155 a few days ago, and that happend smoothly.

Really need a bios update. Temps are 30-26-41!-27 on the four cores. Newest bios fixes instability in the system. Argh!

Wrote Asus a mail about this. Will probably RMA it asap, as i cant stand hardware that isnt stable. Well il see what Asus says first.

The asus software that this board comes with doesnt work at all. Klicking the set up file only makes the "do you want to install this file box" pop up like a bad hickup again and again. Was thinking about trying to update bios trough the asus updater, but since i cant install the software, that will be hard. Going to try and install it from the dvd that came with ther mobo, tomorrow when i get off my nightshift.

I get so pissed off when new hardware have all these problems. Why do asus even bother to include software with theire mobos?

Many people had same issues. Heres from a reviewer of that board: "I spent quite a bit of time with the ASUS Maximus IV GENE-Z. First experience out of the gate was a bad BIOS flash using a USB Flash drive. Let me say up front that it seems a BIOS that I downloaded from the ASUS China FTP site was corrupted. I downloaded it twice and got the same results. The corrupted BIOS load went very well as far as botched BIOS loads go. The Maximus IV GENE-Z POSTed back up, and gave me text suggestions on what to do. The board ended up pushing me back to BIOS version 0208 which gave me an operational motherboard. I went through this process a few times in order to verify what the problem was. I downloaded version 0403 from another ASUS site and was able to update the BIOS without issue. I look at all of this as a good thing. ASUS had some rock solid backup support built into this board if you experience a bad flash."

Hey, good to know you've built the LAN rig. I kind of had that problem before, but it was on much older boards. Why is it happening to these boards as well?

You're trying to update to the ver 0706 right?

Have you tried resitting the cooler and test the temperatures again? Maybe you can also try updating the BIOS from DOS. Asus has that utility for BIOS update from DOS. Probably just need to make a bootable USB with the DOS program and the extracted BIOS file.

Yes i want 0706 or atleast the 0403. I think this is happening way to often with asus boards. The suport isnt very good and theire software is faulty. If i cant update it when i get home from work im gonna return it to seller or hand in a RMA request. this is simply not good enough IMHO.

Ya I know what you mean. Most of the time their products are pretty user friendly. Their customer/technical service has been lacking lately. I'm not sure what it is, but we've had a few RMAs and complaints already regarding some of the Asus boards and video cards not too long ago. It may just be that the ppl were unlucky to get that specific piece of hardware. You know, I don't know what to say to that.

I usually just go with what has worked for me since day 1. I've tried MSI, Asus, and Gigabyte. So far Gigabyte has been the most consistent in all of their products so I've just stuck to Gigabyte.

I might swop mine for a z68 m-ATX Gigabyte board after this annoying thing with the maximus.

If problems do continue, you may as well just return the board if possible and exchange for a Gigabyte mATX. If you do go the Gigabyte route, the only Z68 I can recommend is this one:

http://www.gigabyte....spx?pid=3974#ov

I haven't tried OC-ing with this board yet, but on stock everything seems stable enough. It was for a client build a week ago. I did hear some bad things about the board, but I haven't had any so far. I did update the BIOS so that may have helped. The customer's build has these components:

Intel i5 2500K

Noctua NH-U12P SE2

Gigabyte Z68MX-UD2H-B3 mATX

Mushkin Blackline Frostbyte 2x4GB DDR3-1600 9-9-9-24 1.5V

Gigabyte GTX 570 Fermi Windforce

Fractal Design Define Mini mATX

Corsair AX650

WD 1TB Green SATA 6Gbps

Kingston HyperX 120GB SSD

Samsung SH-B123L 12X BD-ROM/DVD Combo

Asus Xonar DX

That was the MB i was thinking about. Perhaps i should just send it back to the store. Got 30 days to decide for that, or i could send in an RMA request since it doesnt work properly.

It's a great little board. I haven't tried OC-ing with it so I'm not sure how it'll perform. If you're able to get the Gene-Z working again, it'll save tons of time having to RMA it right? Or if you do return the board in exchange for the Gigabyte one, it'll be nice to have you test it out and see how it performs with your OC.

Recieved mail from suport, and im still shaking my head, beacuse of these idiots. They simply didnt read a word of what i told them. If they could send me or point me to a rom file that worked, the problem could be solved. Instead they suggest i use their software that is impossible to install.!!! FFS im angry now.

Heres waht they Said:

-You can also update BIOS in Windows environment using ASUS Update utility. NOTE! failed BIOS updates are not covered by warranty. Please check the user manual for more ways of updating BIOS.

Hi

Trying to understand where along the process you are?

Did you have 0403 and go to 0902 which caused problems now making you try to get 0706 on there?

Have you tried approaching like a corrupt bios?

I'm sure I've used tools before to corrupt a bios just so I could then flash a non matching checksum bios on to a board.

0902 is a beta release. i got first bios 0208. If i could update to 0403 or 0706 it might fix the unstable temps on cpu.

Wow, and you told them that you couldn't install the software too right?

If the Asus support can't really do anything to help you then it's probably better to just return the board to the reseller. Is that the Asus RMA case # at the top right corner?

hey, i hope you didn't get rid of your board yet. I have a maximus (but the bigger one) in my rig and i just recently got an Asus laptop (can see everything i have in my sig)

let me just say that updating the bios in both cases was a pain in the ass, but it does work. you should download the bios (there are several links, try the direct download) thats the one i used. then you might have to put it on a usb stick, or you might not... this is where it got confusing and such.

you have to turn on the machine and then go into the bios, from there under one of the tabs there should be a 'option' or section (whatever its called) called ezflash or ez bios or something to that extent (i don't remember exactly but if you read through there you should be about to find what i mean) then from there you have to find one of the bios files that you downloaded but when selecting the location of the file, i couldn't see it anywhere so i basically had the zip and unzipped it, and then copied both of the files (zipped and unzipped) and pasted them everywhere
tongue.gif
by everywhere i mean on my usb and then in my C:\ and C:\program files, because when i was searching for it i saw those directories.

after like 15-20 min i finally got it to work, and thats that.

so its kinda hard, not intuitive at all

let me know if that helped
biggrin.gif

ALSO are you SURE that the temps are because of the bios????? did you try your chip in other motherboards with the same cooler? (the base of the cooler might be slightly defective right on top of the hotter core, maybe? or maybe its just ur chip?? i no expert but it could be several things that you may want to look for

Thats how ive been flashing bios the last 5 years. With Asus EZ flash II i have the extracted file on a flash usb and i try run it. The EZ flash program says it isnt a Bios file(Rom), lol.......So annoying. starting to hate Asus now. All the other software they provide, witch i could use for updating bios doesnt work.

Problem solved. Extracted the zip rom file with winrar instead of extracting it with windows os. It came to my mind that i once heard something about a game that didnt work properly after extracting it with MS, so i wanted just to try it and it worked. This saved me alot of trouble....

Temps are same, so i need to take off the Noctua and put on new thermal paste and cover the surface more. I used the one drop in the middle method and that didnt work so well, so i go back to my old method :-)

This new bios solves alot of stability issues, so now i can start overclocking. It also enables Intel smart response, lucid virtu, and i can update my sata software. All done now, so i guess its just to ready the computer for day to day use.

Happy happy happy........Asus still got shitty software....Any point in trying to run it now as i got latest bios?

Edit:

Most of the utilities still doesnt work. Wanted bios updater and to control the cpu fan, but i guess il do it in bios instead.

That's wonderful. I didn't know the default Win extractor would cause troubles. At least you fixed this problem with WinRAR. Good experience. Yup, resitting the cooler may work. Maybe there was a small air bubble between the termal compound and the cooler or CPU surface.

I doubt you'll ever really need the software my friend. You could download the latest versions from Asus, but the only thing I see that's worth looking at is the BIOS utility within Windows where you can test live OC with Prime95 running at the same time. Even so, it's probably the best to manually set everything in BIOS and keep testing until everything's perfectly stable in Windows.

Yeah i always o.c manually in bios. Only wanted the cpu fan control and the asus bios updater utility, but i can manage good without, np. Most important is that i got newest bios :-D

Yup, at least you've got it working without any problems, which is the most important. Asus should probably make a fix for their BIOS compressed files or mention that ppl should use some extraction program other than the default MS Win extractor.
