An 18 year old man has been arrested in connection with the hacking of the Playstation Network and Xbox Live services which took place over the Christmas period last month.

The man from Southport, Merseyside (where I live, not its not me!) was arrested and is being held on suspicion of unauthorized access to computer material and also apparently "threats to kill".

Along with these allegations, the arrested man has also been accused of "swatting". Swatting is a term which means prank phone calls are made to emergency services, resulting in armed police being unnecessarily called out for.

The arrest was made as part of a joint effort between UK cyber-crime authorities, including the South East Regional Organized Crime Unit and the National Cyber Crime Unit, and the FBI.

"This investigation is a good example of joint law enforcement cooperation in relation to a type of criminality that is not restricted by any geographical boundaries," SEROCU Cyber Crime Unit head Craig Jones said in a statement.

"We are still at the early stages of the investigation and there is still much work to be done. We will continue to work closely with the FBI to identify those to who commit offences and hold them to account."

Association of Police Officers cyber security lead Peter Goodman added: "This arrest demonstrates that we will pursue those who commit crime with the false perception they are protected within their own homes or hiding behind anonymous online personas."

Any further details on this case will be posted here.

What are your thoughts on this arrest? I'm personally glad to see this happen as along with myself it disturbed many peoples enjoyment over the Christmas period, and I'm sure there was many disapointed children on Christmas day.

In regards to the death threats, this is also good to see action is being taken against these pathetic online threats. Our very own Dicehunter has received similar threats on Facebook this week and it seems to be a common thing within social comments and online gaming.

My thoughts on this, yeah it is good they got someone for being a giant ass and ruined christmas for a lot of people, but these hacks do need a lot of people to pull off and it will never stop, no matter how many arrests are made. Atleast there is one less swatter around and thats good.

I wouldn't class it as a hack in the traditional sense as it was just a simple DDoS attack.

I don't think it'll put off other "Script kiddies" as the supposed "hacking" software is readily available and doesn't require much/if any intelligence to run.

I doubt the guy that was caught was the one who setup their botnet/or a big fish within the group. Its actually quite clever how they set it up by using routers around the world that hadn't had their passwords changed...

Probably not. Stupid/lazy on the end user part though.

This is good to see and thanks for the mention ^_^

Personally I'm tired of people treating others like dirt just because they are safe behind their keyboards, Threatening people or emotionally bullying them is just a complete douche bag thing to do and this "Hacking" needs to stop, They are not helping anyone, No point is being made, DDoS'ing services is just highlighting that the person/people doing it are complete jackasses.

Lizard squads excuse for DDoS'ing was "They should increase security so we are making people aware of the low security" but even the best DDoS protection is easy to get around from what I've read so their point is BS.

Personally I'm all for these cyber crime prevention agencies, Full steam ahead I say.

Hmm well depends where u live, where I come from in Sweden then at 18 you get your own place. But in spain the AVERAGE age to be independant is at 33....... :o

Its 24ish in the UK I believe. Depends on what area you are in.

To be fair to Lizard Squad, Sony have been given a get out of jail free card by the US who managed to blame North Korea for the hacking and when asked to produce evidence that it actually was 100% them, they magically classified the evidence.

Its obvious lizard squad weren't doing it to demonstrate lax security though, I must say ;D.

Also I don't want more regulation on the internet, but I'm sure thats another discussion for another day.

The problem is they will never stop hacking cause look at how many people they have got for "hacking" every time they arrest 1 person there are like 3 more to take that place.
