Apple iMac 27" 3.2GHz Core i3

Introduction

Apple have recently become known for their quality portable products, the iPhone, iPod, iPad, etc etc, but people often forget about their main customer base, and you would be forgiven for doing so, with the sheer number of people adopting apples mobile devices, however, their desktop and laptop front have been increasing strongly too.

and this is where i start this review, with one of their desktop computers, the iMac lineup has been around for some years now, as apple's all in one alternative to fiddly pc's.

apple advertise this computer as the all in one with one wire, and indeed, if you opt for the standard configuration, including the magic mouse and wireless bluetooth keyboard, there is only one wire, the power cord.

the concept for an all in one pc started a while back, when somebody at apple thought that a normal pc made a desk too cluttered, and the result, the first imac, it was a sucess, and since then apple have gone from streignth to streignth.

if you are unfamiliar with the iMac range, have a quick gander here first: www.apple.com/uk/imac

for the keyboard, see here: http://www.apple.com/uk/keyboard/

for the trackpad, see here: http://www.apple.com/uk/magictrackpad/

and for the mouse, see here: http://www.apple.com/uk/magicmouse/

Packaging

right, now, lets take a look what mr UPS man delivered

Image093.jpg

i ordered a printer with mine, simply because there was £70 off the stock price, making it nice and afordable...

do note the envelope ontop of the printer box.

opening the box, this is what we see:

Image094.jpg

and out of the box, here we have it, a box!

its a rather nice looking box though, soft cardboard, if you have ever bought a apple product you will know what i mean, if not, it has a similar feeling to photo paper.

Image095.jpg

here we have the front of the box

Image096.jpg

and here we have the side showing standard included products.

Image097.jpg

Specification

Processor: intel Core i3 3.2GHz 550

Ram: 4GB DDR3-1333 SO-DIMM

Hard Drive: Seagate 1Tb

Graphics: ATi Radeon 5670

Screen: 27" 2560x1440 with IPS

Wired keyboard

Magic mouse

Magic trackpad

Apple Remote

iSight camera

integrated mic

The contents

so, time to open the box, and here we go, how neatly packed is that, nice and safe, it would take a particually careless courier to damage the contents of this...needless to say my courier dropped the box out of the back of the van and it was indeed fine.

Image098.jpg

here we have the contents of the box removed, it includes :

a smaller box

the iMac itself

the power cable

Image099.jpg

now we come to the odd envelope....what have we here...

Image100.jpg

items added below, a disk and a book ...apple care, taken out again due to cheep price on education store...

items were sent by themselves.

Image101.jpg

opening the box, we find somthing that you would not find with a standard specification iMac, of any size or variaty, i have chosen the wired keyboard over the wireless one that could have been included

before you think i have gone completely doolally though, i do have my reasons, the wired keyboard has two powered usb ports available on it, it doesnt need its batteries changing every 3 months, and i like having a keypad on my keyboard

Image102.jpg

once that had been removed, you can clearly see my touchpad, another none-standard option, that i chose, it is essencially like a touch pad for a laptop, but it is a bit bigger, and it supports all of the gestures any of you familiar with the iphone, ipod, ipad, or macbook / macbook pro / macbook air will be familiar with, such as pinching to make smaller, or bigger, two fingers to scroll, right click by using two fingers etc etc

this attaches via bluetooth and uses two AA batteries (there was no wired alternitive available)

also in this pic, you may notice the small white package in the middle, more on this next

Image103.jpg

so, lets move this setup to the temporary desk ...the dining room table
tongue.gif

you can see here the sheer size of the thing, you can see the trackpad, and the mysterious white package is actually the magic mouse, you can also see the remote, which was hidden away behind some instruction books in that box previous.

morrisons sausage roll anyone?
tongue.gif

Image104.jpg

*pants* 15 minutes later and a lot of packaging removed .... (s sheet of plastic on the base, a bag over the entire machine, and two very strong, very adhesive sheets of plastic over the screen. and here we are, here it is in all its glory!

Image105.jpg

the power button is very well hidden round the back of the left hand side (as you look at it, bottom left), now asmuch as i like the sleek looks of the machine, this is rather fiddly to find, ...albeit most people wouldnt be bothered, but i figure for very neerly £1500, this should have been thought out a bit better...buttons dont have to interfear with the design, but should be atleast easy to find, for example, if the black apple logo on the front was turned into a button? wouldnt hurt? or even if they machined a touch sensor for the on button onto the front, like they machined holes in the macbook pro ....again, possible, and would have worked quite well.

Image107.jpg

here however we have the iMac's major downfall,

its conectivity,

4x usb 2

1x aux audio in

1x aux audio out

1x mini display port

1x firewire 800 port

1x gigabit eithernet port

now this is an alright lineup, however, apple with all their claims to be forward thinking, havent been very forward thinking here

usb 3 is just arround the corner, no support?

HDMI is fast becoming standard, no support?

DVI is an industry standard, no support?

this is not a good side to the new iMac,however, it does make up for it in some ways, it does have bluetooth built in as standard, this is an up side

it does have wireless 802.11n built in as standard, this is an up side too

it supports SD cards, upto 2TB (SDXC)

and it has full support for DVD and CD media, ...however disapointingly no blu-ray support, this has been mentioned in many reviews of this and other apple products, however, asmuch as i would like blu-ray is asmuch as i can live without it, the clarity of the display is incredible, and if i want blu-ray, its simple, buy a mini-display port - hdmi adapter, and hook my ps3 up, simples, as a certain fluffy critter on telly would say.

the inbuilt speakers (not pictured) run along the bottom of the screen, and they are good, they are not profesional quality, nor do they claim to be, but they are good enough quality for an average msn/internet/text document user, and they far surpass those of a typical laptop.

Image108.jpg

Image132.jpg

so, keyboard plugged in, power plugged in, on i shal turn it.

Image109.jpg

then you go through a setup process, if you've ever set up any operating system you know how mundane this can be, set time, set locaton, set an account, username, password etc etc...very simple stuff

Image110.jpg

Image111.jpg

Image112.jpg

Image113.jpg

i wont bore you with details of how to set up the OS, anyone and their dog should be able to do this with no issue

right, it is set up, so ...the sheer size and quality of that screen, its incredible:

Image114.jpg

one thing i rather like on mac OSX, is the dashboard app, showing apps, in a similar way to windows vista's sidebar:

Image115.jpg

its just a bit bloomin chilly out there...

time for some artsy pics, or as best i can using my standard 5mp camera phone....the keyboard and the trackpad are the same colour, the same height and same angle ...so they match rather well, although acording to other pics i have seen the trackpad matches the wireless keyboard even better...however...i made my choise...

Image116.jpg

the keys are hard to explain, they are almost identical to those on the macbook pro (excepting the colour)

they are very soft, it takes little effort to make a keystroke

however, they have a positive resounding feel when typing, it feels almost instinctive, its very natural

they keys feel good under the finger, however, suprisingly they are quite noisy, i imagined them to be quite quiet, however, nay.

Image117.jpg

artsy pic of the keyboard and trackpad.

Image118.jpg

the apple remote, demonstrated laying across the trackpad, this is a very handy device if you use or plan to use the iMac as an entertainment center, it is infra red, so you have to be within a certain distance, and a certain angle, but after a bit of testing, it is quite good for the angles you can use it, if your not stupid, and you use a bit of common sense, it will work from some bizare angles, ....

Image119.jpg

here we have the magic mouse, it is a very...odd looking device...apple pre-installed the batteries in both this and the trackpad, which had me confused, i was scowering through the box for some AA batteries, i eventually thought apple were tight-wads, considering the price of it, but alas, no, it was my lack of noticing that was the fault.

Image120.jpg

Image121.jpg

Image122.jpg

a quick review on the trackpad:

its a brilliant little thing, if you get used to a macbook, or a macbook pro, and you want the same experience on the desktop, here is where you look, it is a £59 optional extra, however, in this reviewers opinion, it is worth every penny, it is a brilliant, brilliant, brilliant device, it clicks, it scrolls, it right clicks, it does everything you could need it to, and if your getting just a bit bored of your normal boring old mouse, its a brilliant idea for an upgrade, ...if you want further information, scroll back to the introduction, i posted a link to its official page.

the magic mouse deserves its own review really, but i shal sum it up here, its a cracking little mouse, its rather brilliant...

when i first started using it, i couldnt get used to it, it felt too small in my hand (odd, considering i have rather small hands anyway) but it didnt feel quite right, however, after a bit of use, it feels more comfortable, and the touch sensors are actually brilliant, it has the same swiping technology as the trackpad, and the ipod, iphone etc as mentioned earlier...if you want to scroll, just go to scroll asif there was a scroll wheel, and it will scroll, if you want to go back and forth through pages in firefox, easy peasy, two finger swipe, ....its a brilliant little thing, it also does the bog standard left, and right click.

Image131.jpg

here is a list of the standard applications installed as standard, excepting firefox, that is my adition as soon as i got it, first things first and all
tongue.gif

Image123.jpg

good god how small does that look on this screen!!

Image124.jpg

a bit over stretched?
tongue.gif

Image125.jpg

the quality of this screen just wont come through in photo's, its so bright, its so vibrent, its so clear, and its simply gorgeous ....if i hadnt just paid in the region of £1500, i would be licking it, it looks so good

Image126.jpg

played around with some different desktop options, here is a snow leopard, ....after the name of the OS
smile.gif

Image127.jpg

settled for a pic ive had for a while, off my old external drive, its the only one on the entire drive of the resolution of that massive screen

Image128.jpg

Conclusion

This is a brilliant package, an all in one pc, with a 27" moniter, for little more than the moniter is worth by itself

the advantage of mac OSX, no viruses, no spyware etc etc are all here

the programs available for mac are growing all the time

the innovations in some of the devices to go with the iMac are brilliant

and after owning it for 5 hours i can honestly say...i like it
tongue.gif

so, to sum up:

Pro's

  • Brilliant Screen
  • Decent hardware power
  • very neat and tidy (if you choose the wireless keyboard)
  • decent quality inbuilt speakers
  • good quality iSight camera
  • Good quality microphone
  • really smart style and design
  • no viruses/spyware with it being mac osx
  • so simple to use even your granny could do it
  • very very quiet under normal use

Alright's

  • Not a bad selection of ports
  • a bit pricy (but worth it)
  • no wired trackpad, or magic mouse (i see it as a con, but others may be alright with it, so compromise)
  • power cable a bit short
  • seems to run a bit warm
  • bigger than HD quality screen, so HD 1080p would have to be scaled up to fit

Con's

  • Abysmal lack of modern ports (USB3/HDMI/DVI)
  • lack of some windows programs yet making the jump to OSX
  • neck ache from having to look at so many angles?

any questions, or anything anyone wants me to add, picture etc etc?

Nice quick review Ionicle. Only apple thing I have is my phone, but if I had the dosh I would go the way you did for a work type pc.

Great review m8, I have never been very interested in MAC's but your review had me drawn in til the end, nice work......

I have an Iphone 4 thats enough apple products for me LOL

I am a PC buff thru and thru though.
smile.gif

thanks, i do try and make my writing interesting, not just the same dull droning as everyone else...

the hard part was at the end trying to be honest with the pro's and cons of it, i really like it so it was hard to critisize it, however, i think i pointed out its flaws most objectively...

anything missing y'think?

I remember about the power botton on them IMac's We stayed in a hotel recently that the MAC was the TV etc etc, took me and my other half a few minutes to figure how you turned it on.......

Kinda funny

cool cool looks nice man hope it treats you well costs enough lol, i have a mac book pro for design (do graphic design at uni) but only got the laptop for use at university else im using my trusty pc thats twice as fast and twice as cheap lol
biggrin.gif

aye, i also have a MBP 13.3" ...its because of that that i invested the money in this...

10. hahahaha !! Brilliant
biggrin.gif

Glad you got your Mac sorted. Lovely looking piece of equipment there
smile.gif

lol, its far from quick, took me over an hour to write and upload pics...

think anything is missing?

i was attempting to aim for the quality of a front page review...

obv its not gonna get posted there, but ...

I remember about the power botton on them IMac's We stayed in a hotel recently that the MAC was the TV etc etc, took me and my other half a few minutes to figure how you turned it on.......

Kinda funny

haha, aye, if i hadnt read 6749674967496 reviews on it before i bought it i would have had the same issue probably, but i figured it out in no time after knowing where it was
tongue.gif

EDIT: guess my sig needs an update now...

i will add after a bit, what its like to live with this ...device
tongue.gif
after a while
smile.gif

EDIT:

Image135.jpg

here it is in its final use place
smile.gif

and its time to give this a big overhaul after 3 years of not even taking the side off...it needs a clean and a bit of an update...

Image134.jpg

smile.gif
lol, its far from quick, took me over an hour to write and upload pics...

think anything is missing?

I was referring to the speed that you got the review up onto the site from taking delivery, glad it was taken the other way though, made me smile seeing others comments
cool.gif

ahha, i dont like to hang around, i took pics during unpacking, and first thing i did after turning it on, installing firefox and updating it, was start uploading pics and typing the review, i hate waiting for things, so i hate imposing the same wait on other people...

did you vote in my poll in the previous thread btw?

Updates!

after having lived with it on overnight in my bedroom, i can report it is silent at all times...

it gets warm to the touch, but not overly hot, even when multi-tasking, ...

i think i will get neck ache long term from the size of the screen
tongue.gif

another fail for the list though...apple, please put a usb port on the side of it next time, having four (which i filled btw) just isnt enough, and having them on the back is fiddley and awkward....

my 4 are filled with: phone wire, ipod wire, keyboard, and ext HDD.

i have made use of the gigabit eithernet, works just as it should do ....perfectly...

another thing to mention, the touch pad ...it clicks when you press it down, but when you pick it up, it wont....i couldnt figure it out, until i realised the rubber mats on the base of it are the buttons, thats ingenious!

apple products in summery are rather well thought out, bar a few minor omissions due to athstetics over practicality (usb port for example)

and i believe it will be reliable, as the spec, although not majorly brilliant, is all tried and tested technology, and thus should remain reliable for years to come.

EDIT: i will also add, i prefer itunes when its on a mac by a huge margin...

it seems easier to use somehow, i know its the same software, but on a pc its interfearing all the time, wheras on a mac, it is the sole audio player, so it cant interfear, because its the only one there..

it just imported the entire library of music from my phone (5 or so gig) in like about 4 minutes...processed it, and stored it on the mac's hard drive, just by playing it off my phone, brilliantly simple!

not to mention, just plugged my phone in (nokia 6700 slide in silver) and it recognised what it was instantly and mounted the drive for me to access streight away...none of that searching for drivers rubbish like on vista...

i might also add that my phone actually fits in more with a mac than the iPhone does ...google for a 6700 slide and an iMac if you dont know what i mean
tongue.gif

i think i know what nokia had up on the mood board
tongue.gif

i will also add after having listened now to everything from cascada to the beatles, the speakers are actually rather good, better than the scythe karma bay i reviewed a while back, better than my phone loudspeaker, and miles ahead of my dell inspirion 1525 laptop, they are better than those in your average HDTV in my opinion, quite basey, but good all round ... and very clear.

My other half is on about getting an Imac after seeing this, But can you watch TV on it??????? or do you need other hardware?

definatly no as standard

as for with an adapter, im not sure, its not somthing i ever planned to do, so its not somthing i ever looked into...

one thing i will mention though

after watching a video at standard definition (320x240) upscaled to full screen (2560x1440) its not bad at all!, i expected horiffic pixelation, but actually, ...i mean, you can tell its being upscaled, but its watchable, and better than you can really imagine initially...

apple do support a lot of hardware just as standard, so it'd be worth having a quick google for it, the drivers for a lot of products are stored as standard on the hard drive....

and as for the quality of the brightness and clarity of the screen, i cant do this justice with words, its unlike any ive seen before...

i would put a note of caution though, if you do get one, dont have it in a brightly lit room, or with a window behind you, or you will have a £1000+ mirror
tongue.gif

EDIT: ill post a pic of my iMac displaying an image, and my 22" DGM DVI monitor showing the same image, and if i can, ill get it up on my samsung HDTV too, and you can compare for yourself the quality...i know thats not what you asked, but ....just to explain my above point a bit better
smile.gif

EDIT2:

here we go, actually its a close call between my samsung telly, and my iMac....

the samsung is better for brightness, yes, but the picture just isnt as perfect as it could be, its a tad grainy...wheras the iMac is perfectly clear...you can see just how terrible this monitor i have really is in this pic
tongue.gif

Image136.jpg

EDIT3: that pic really is awful, my phone is not so great at taking pics when it has to judge light, but take it from me, in real life, the iMac has the most lifelike mixture of colours, and its the only one where at normal distance away (i.e. sitting distance) you cannot distinguish individual pixels ...

EDIT4: infact, that was so awful, ive taken closeups of the numberplate on each moniter and uploaded the seperatly...here we go:

iMac:

Image137.jpg

22" DGM 1680x1050 DVI monitor:

Image138.jpg

Samsung HDTV, 1080p 32"

Image139.jpg

EDIT5: woahh, you can see the difference there!...you can see what i mean really clearly...

thats just reminded me, i got one, for my birthday last year an el-cheapo one out of a magasine...someone thought it'd make a good present...i could test it?

That would be cool, to see if it is any good LOL!

What do you use the Apple remote for???? Itunes etc, sorry i'm a Imac nOOb....

There are actually quite a few TV dongles for Macs. Imho Elgato makes the best ones, because they have solid quality and their software is pretty amazing. But you will deffo need some kind of usb dongle, since the Mac doesn't have the feature of being a TV tuner itself. Just look around their website and I'm sure you'll find one.

What connection are you going to be using for it? Antenna or cable?

That would be cool, to see if it is any good LOL!

What do you use the Apple remote for???? Itunes etc, sorry i'm a Imac nOOb....

to be honest, when i selected it for £15 extra, i just thought it would control iTunes...how wrong i was...it launches a ...what i can best describe as a media center program, that runs independant of itunes, and uses a full screen app like windows media center, allowing you to select music, video's etc, it lets you control volume etc etc...and navigate all your music, pics and vid's from a distance, its rather good to be honest...

and you may have to give me some time to route it out, i cant seem to find it...moved house since i got given it y'see
tongue.gif

EDIT:

guess what, pics of the media center uploading
biggrin.gif

i will add these into the main review when i get chance, ...but any more questions ill do my best to answer
smile.gif

EDIT2: Yes the remote works with itunes...just tested
tongue.gif

pics still uploading of the media center...

EDIT3:
