TV tuner cards have the decoder on the card itself which means it requires very minimal CPU power when watching.

ya but cheap ones use a lot of cpu power when recording.

Can you send me the link to the card that you have? I'm hinking of getting one because i don't have a TV in my room but would like one and a TV tuner sounds like the solution. If not yours then a little nicer one that won't slow my cpu down.

Well, you must understand that the picture quality will not be as good as a real TV, its quite a bit worse even with expensive ones. Im happy with mine because it is good enough, and cheap. I never really record anything, so its fine for me. Or if i am recording i just cant play cs:s or something at the same time. But i can still surf web/use aim or something like that while recording.

I guess my cards price went up as well. now its $35 + ship

Yea np, also my quality is pretty good. especially since it is running off a splitter with my cable modem

I believe you meant encoder? Just wondering, because I am looking at getting one for a MythTV system and if there were a card with an mpeg II encoder and decoder built in, it would rock.

Nope, encoding is CPU intensive, decoding is done by the card afaik

Hmm some cards do it the other way, such as the Hauppage cards. Most modern video cards have decoding capabilities, but I thought that most capture cards either did nothing other than the raw capture, or they did the encoding.
