Ok I have set up my two raptors 74gb on my system I installed the sata driver disk I am using a dfi mobo and xp pro now my hardware manager see's the drives as one big 136gb (or there abouts) how can I tell if its set up in raid 0 or not ???

They are set-up in RAID mate.

But to check as PC posts it should open a screen that says NVRAID (or SIL RAID if you are unlucky enough to heve them on the SIL controller), that you have two raptors striped and that it is healthy.

On this screen you are promted to press F10 to enter set-up - which yiu can do just to double check.

Cheers

Totally OT but I'd rather I hadn't set up my 2 400Gb Hitachis in a NVRAID stripe array when I moved to the RDX200 (which supports silraid). Where the hell am I going to back up 800Gb to reRAID them? 8)

Just a minor counterpoint. (It's on topic, honestly ).

Truth is - you gotta forget about backing up RAID all together - unless you have an extremely capacious drive and several hours to lose :)

Floppies! Lots and lots of floppies! :D (555,556 1.44MB disks should suffice...).

Seriously, a 500GB hard disk would seem the best way to start (assuming you don't already have 500GB of data) and you can either pick up a larger disk in a years' time or get another 500GB. Most (decent) image backup utilities should allow you to split a backup across multiple files/drives.

I have a 2TB buffalo NAS on my network - works a charm, also acts as a print server.

Crikey Nick thats some kit mate - love to see some picks of how you set it all up.

How long does it take to back up a RAID set-up and what do you use exactly?

Ghost (yeah i know it's norton) works well actually. The compression is very very good, i can back up roughly 100gb in 10mins and be back up and running in 20mins total. This is all backed up to my nas drive.

None of my computers are actually running raid although the NAs itself is - its just 4 500GB drives which are mirrored so 1TB of storage, also has 4 USB slots so you can add other external drives or printers etc.

Its very easy to set up - I have it to back up every Monday morning at 4am - the wireless computers take qutie a while to do but as it happens there isn't that much data on those PCs.
