anime anyone?

more japanese cartoon people?

I'm being serious here. What is the appeal, and why do people fixate on the single type of awkward animation?

Ryan

What's the appeal?

Well do you watch films? Why do you enjoy the types of films you like?

The truth is that a lot of anime is just like normal hollywood films but without the limitations that hollywood films have. The good guy doesn't have to win, the story doesn't need to be spoon fed to you (in fact sometimes the story is up to you to interpret, a thing which some films from the west have attempted to copy), things don't need watered down to cater to the masses, and more specifically to anime there doesn't need to be physical limitations. Anything that the creator/writer/director can imagine can be done without a ridiculous budget.

And yeah some of the animation is rubbish but the majority of it is fantastic with newer films (like appleseed) using a mix of cgi and animation that just looks incredible.

lol - some of it is totally awful but some is pretty amazing.

To completely write off a whole genre as 'awkward animation' is ignorant tbh.

I agree with both, the effects you can create without a massive budget are amazing.

*random*

I remember a cartoon I had when I was 10 (1991) which seemed like anime, can't remember what it was called :( might see if I can find it :)

Don't end your post like that. That's not okay.

The reason I say it is awkward is the eyes are goofy, the hair is ridiculous, and they all seem to follow the same general style. What I would consider good animation is to duplicate what something actually looks like. The fact 90% of these japanese cartoons do this is a little... silly. Originality is lacking, as they follow a template. Artists know that true, original, and good art doesn't follow a template.

Hollywood isn't constrained by certain things. You're probably just watching the wrong movies, just like you said some of the japanese cartoons are. No matter what you look into, there's always someone doing a sloppy and bad job of it. Country music has Rascal Flatts, I mean, low quality stuff is everywhere, and that's not what I'm talking about. I'm not trying to make fun of your cartoons, but am curious why people are so 'stuck' on a single animation style, like some kind of addiction.

What's the appeal? Honestly, I can't tell you. That is the same type of question as if I asked why the hell people like hearing other people screaming to noise in death metal (and yes, I know that you can argue that this is not the case, but that is my view on it and I'd rather not get into that discussion). It's the same as asking why people like certain types of food, why people like certain fashions, etc etc etc. It's all about taste.

Most (if not all) cartoons are

Wouldn't that be hard to do (and pointless) with a cartoon  also it's not meant to look as real as say a simulation or cgi in a movie, that's one of the things which makes it interesting.

Who is stuck on a single animation style

Didn't think the thread was about only watching anime ?

I watched Ghost in the shell last night and was amazed!!

The sound/effects/animation & storyline makes it totally amazing. I can't wait to watch the 2nd one :D

I just watched Ghost in the shell 2 :)

It was ok, reminded me of a dream in the way it went and it was excellent. I think the first one was better.

All of the quotes and stuff made it quite interesting aswell.

Yeah I prefered the first one, the second one isn't bad, it's just not as good. You should get the updated appleseed next, even if you don't like the story it just looks incredible! (the story is actually pretty good too)

I just tried Ragnarok Online and so far I got to level6 but have got bored :(

The graphics look years old :( all the characters are just sprites walking around in a 3d world. Reminds me of how duke nukem was lol

The game just seems a bit boring  I killed a few things which was even more boring that WoW :( the interface seems really bad aswell.
