Andre's Z77 Personal Rig

Hi man!

Well I was getting under 8000 now I am getting somewhere towards 10000... not impressive at the moment...

I just finished trying one last time 945MHZ on the core at 1.4V but it crashed with the fan going to 100%... wonder if that's a safe crash or something, I dunno. Seems that raising the volts doesn't matter at all. I am just going to try going to 932MHz on the core with 1053 on the VRAM and if that doesn't work, I'll have to call it at 918/1053.

Yeah I'd probably throw that out that H100 out of there too if I had a better choice... My system right now doesn't make unbarable noises, fan noise I can handle, especially when I play a game and the volume is up, but rattling noises .. no. I had a ew fans in the past that needed some oil lol... I couldn't handle it... and when the room is cold and I start my system my PSU fan rattles like crazy a couple of minutes till it gets warm.. but there's nothing I can do, I can't get to it without voiding the warranty. How's your day?

i guess i should mention that my father didn't choose the haf x case because he liked the look of it -- the last motherborad he has was a gigabyte g1 assassin, which as you may know is a good 2 inches or so taller than standard atx, so he needed a case that could accommodate that and he just picked up the haf for that reason.

that's why you can see in this picture that there is another row of standoffs still there along the bottom of the board, because i didn't bother taking them out when we switched boards

i remember i used to have the haf 932 a few years ago and i had the stock fans in there they used to make ticking noises intermittently and i hate that sort of thing. even back then when i wasn't as obsessed with silence as i am now it still bugged me a lot. that crappy ultra x3 psu also spun the fan very fast and made a lot of noise, i dont know if it was defective or what. even since then i've been using good fans. and and i told you about my 80mm fans days before that which was even worse with stuff like the tornado ;)

i believe the athlon x2 i had paired with the sapphire 4980 got somewhere in the range of 6,000, but i could be mistaken. 10,000 sounds pretty good to me :)

i'm good i have a couple things lined up to do, right now i'm having a play with the x79 system again, i have another budget system to take a look at later for someone, and then i have a couple things i want to get to with my own and i am planning to do a similar style video on my own computer as i did on my x79 build but maybe a bit longer with some proper notes and cover some more things in detail with it.

how are you ??

here is a couple pictures of the g1 assassin broad -- it was a good board for sure, but i hate guns on heatsinks so i don't like the heatsink design on it or the lime green. the x79 assassin is even worse with a full pistol heatsink on the chipset.

I am alright, just finishing up this overclock here, I was hoping my 918/1053 would be stable on stock volts but nooo.. 1.33V!! SO it seems to be working, gonna play and test it further to make sure it is 100% stable. I am glad I got this far.

Watched a few good people win the Christmas Compo prizes... and yes I did enter but I didn't expect to win, luck has never been on my side heh. But I am glad some people got what they needed.

Ok So your dad got it cause it was more, somewhat, practical. I know that motherboard, and frankly... I don't like the theme of it at all! In this situation, I wouldn't mind owning one but if I had a choice I'd probably chose one like yours, or something completely black. But I kinda like how all the colors mix up... it's got a little bit of everything but not too much.. little bit of green here, little bit of blue there.. and that shade of green from the Sniper goes very well with black, in my opinion ( green= my favorite color ).

I've been watching your videos and they look good, you must have a really good camera cause your pics and vids look outstanding!!!

i agree i don't like the design of the g1 that much but at the time it was a really good board so that's why he was using it.

the rampage iv extreme is kind of the same story--personally red is not my favorite, but the rampage iv is the best x79 board, so that is why my father picked it.. i would probably go with something different myself though like this z79 up4 shown below

i generally prefer black/grey black/dark blue like these two new boards from msi or something like the GD-65 from msi, or like that dual thunderbolt motherborad from gigabyte. i don't really like the yellow on the mpower but it'a not that big a deal really.

there is also a gigabyte board i saw recently probably at CES that has such a great looking heatsink on the chipset, i will post a picture of that if i find out what model it is.

Update: yes it is this one here. this sort of design of heatsink is probably my favorite i just love all those little layers it has it looks so nice in my opinion.

Wow I love the color on that X79-UP4, and the heatsink design is really cool... look at the size of that heatsink on the chipset, it looks fantastic, I really like that and the color.

I know the Sniper is a good board, I've seen a couple of reviews about it, I would chose it myself and ignore my disliking with the heatsink design.

I've been trying to save a fe bucks for a cheap CPU, and before CHristmas I was thinking of getting an FX 6100, it's 120 USD on newegg or the 6300 which is pretty good. What do you think? Do you have any suggestions, opinions, criticism? They are welcome if you do :).

yes i agree that is probably my favorite looking board right now! i wish they made a heatsink like that for some of their z77 boards but i dont see anything like it in the z77 range. that dual thunderbolt z77 board is pretty though i might choose something like that if i was picking a board again, but i dont regret my choice at all though.

the 6300 looks like a pretty good chip for the money! if it was me i might look at a graphics card before a new cpu because usually you can get more of a performance bump from a graphics upgrade vs a cpu upgrade

I know, I do need a graphics upgrade.. hell I need a whole rig upgrade, but my CPU already bottlenecks me in BF3 especially when I have a few programs running in the background, like a browser, afterburner and speedfan, and yes I have seen Tom's review on the tahiti LE 7870.. which is an awesome card!! That definitely is the card of my choice, but it's a lot more than I can afford right now.

The FX 6300 has probably one of the best price/performance ratios on the market, but I am also considering the 6100. We'll see! :)

Thank you for the comment about my pictures and videos by the way! I have been taking photographs since 2001 :) I use a Canon S100 for the videos since it is 1080p and i upload them in 1080. I usually compress it to about 8mb/s just so it's smaller to upload then youtube may do something else to it after that, but if you select 1080 on youtube it still looks pretty good. (but not as good as the original file). For photos I carry a Nikon S8000 in my pocket at all times but for the computer pictures I generally use a Canon G12/G11. There is also a Fujifilm X10 on the way soon ;)

With your CPU and GPU I think they are probably around the same age, right? So I'm not sure which one would be a bottlenneck if any, but you're probably right if it is one it's probably the CPU.

I saw the video for the Tahiti LE cards but the problem with them is that I had a look and the one on Newegg is $259, but you can get a 7950 now for $279, so why not just get a 7950.

it is the h100 pump and he had 2 in a row that were all like that. it is not my computer it's my dad's and he doesn't care enough to replace it with something else.

the g1 assassin is an x58 board, that was the last board my dad had. the system he has now is x79 and it has a rampage iv extreme. i was just showing a picture of how the system used to look when it had the old board in it.

there are pictures of the new build on the log here: http://forum.overclock3d.net/showpost.php?p=602857&postcount=31

i'll keep my eye out for your updates :)

It has been my pleasure :) .

So you got quite a collection of video recording devices there. For the moment I am using an old Sony from 2003, it's crap but the pics are still acceptable, the only bad thing about it is the video quality, it simply sucks, low res!

Well I was playing the campaign of BF3 yesterday and I was also keeping an eye on the forum and my mail and newegg, cause I remembered about the 6100 and 6300, and taking a peek at the prices ( they haven't changed ) and I noticed bad framerates in BF3 all this time. I looked at the CPU usage ant it was about 98% average and my card was in between 50% - 70% usage so I closed Chrome and everything changed for the better. so ... I do think that the CPU needs to be replaced fast.. and that Tahiti LE 7850 is very expensive. A card I'd also be considering would be a 7770, but I don't know about that.

My overclock seems to be stable at 918/1053, but I wish I could have gone higher on the core. Voltages are 1.33V in 3d mode and 1.29 in 2d. Cause of that freeze problem I have been forced to increase the 2d Volts and set the 2d clocks as high as those of the 3d clocks... so far it seemed to have made a difference... but I'm still testing.
