Andre's Z77 Personal Rig

Yeah your dad sounds like my dad too. These are the kind of engineers that matter.

Nice little MSI software you got there. Is it useful? Man, I can't belive the different between the price and quality of my MSI board VS yours. I am glad mine still gives me plenty of options to overclock, control over all the voltages that are important trough the same old blue/yellow interface. Some peple still prefer that type of BIOS!:)

well i just used it to turn on plug and play for sata port 2 which is the one i have the case hot swap bay connected to now ;)

i have a bunch of external hard drives but i barely use them anymore because i just put bare drives into the hot swap bay all the time, it's really useful--i use it almost every day.

i know with the asus and gigabyte boards i've worked with you can switch between 3d bios and the legacy style bios, im not sure if you can with the msi boards though. there definitely is something nostalgic about the old style bios though. i still like them.

your board seems like a good board for the price to me!

That's a lot of storage space!! I need!! :)

ah man i've got so much data it's actually a burden if you ever need to move it around!

3tb drives are nice though, they are really fast.

i took apart my external raid enclosure last night and i have some pictures of that which i will include in an update shortly, maybe tomorrow.

I really need a big storage drive and a boot drive... this one I am using is getting old... well it actually IS old, and I need to change it. I am playing BF3 with an OC on the Graphics card, testing it to see if it holds... It seems to be holding so far but I get freezes and driver stops responding sometimes, but sometimes it doesn't recover and this happens when I alt+tab or quit the game... what I thought is that when the graphics card goes from 3D mode to 2D low power mode it freezes for some reason or makes the driver stop responding for a few. So I wrote the same values for all clocks 3D and 2D to see what happens, if it freezes or not... but I am guessing that's why it freezes... the transition from the high power mode to low power mode might be to blame. We shall see :) .

Speaking of BF3, it seems that it's not the HDD that causes those stutter/freezes. Sometimes the VRAM doesn't get as full as other times, and when it gets full at about 1010MB it stutters, but when it stays below 920MB it doesn't... I am guessing that the Game is crappy, not necessarily my hardware.

Looking forward for that update!

like i said dragon might be your ram and 1tb are now like 50 quid i think im sure i remember when they doubled in price because they had there flood lol

it's hard to say for sure because it could be any number of things, but basically if your hardware is under the recommended specifications for whatever game you're playing it's not going to be guaranteed that it's going to run well.

i know that bf3 did not run well on the system my sister had last year with the 2X 4890's in crossfire / 990FX UD7 motherboard / phenom 965 cpu and 12GB of 1600 MHz kingston hyperx memory.

i just looked at the recommended graphics card for bf3 is a 6950 of better. my experience with the 6950 is that it will run bf3 on ultra @ 1080p ok in single player but not multiplayer , so even the recommended graphics card they list just barely runs bf3 smoothly in all situations

andre im running a 965 be at 4.0 oc and a old old old 5770 soc lol and 8 gig of ram 2 x 4 gb of veng 1600 mhz :P

that was just my own experience with the 6950. it would run bf3 on ultra just fine in single player but it wouldn't do ultra in multiplayer with playable fps. 6950 is just fine though if you turn down the details to medium high though

what settings and frames do you get with your setup in bf3?

umm old skool there aight there kinda was close to the single ssd my mate running when i had 2 in raid loading bf3 i cant remember the times but it was close lol and hes is a ssd sata 3 6 gig mines 2 x sata 2 3 gig :Pand they run 10k rpm

Mine plays it pretty well, smoothly when it doesn't stutters it sometimes hits 90 FPS and goes down as low as 35 FPS on Ultra without AA. but the best experience is when I run it from high settings down to medium etc get about 50 FPS on High. I'd probably get a few additional FPS if I get a better CPU, and RAM... yeah I think I need more than 4 gigs.

if you can run at medium settings with little or no stuttering than i'd say that is pretty good.

Those are some nice little Raptors you got there man.

Ok! A little update! As I mentioned before I was testing an overclock on my graphics card... weirdly I overclocked my VRAM first from 900 to 1053MHz/2106MHz and my cores from 825 to 905MHz. I have just done an alt+tab test... I think I alt+tabbed 100 times without any issue. I guess I was kinda right, the freezes were because of the 3d mode to 2d mode transition, .. why? I have no clue! but it seems to be working... I am not going to say this is a stable clock yet... I'll give it a few days of gaming , testing and alt+tabbing.

Yes Andre I think it's pretty nice that I can play it on these kind of settings on such a low end computer. Far Cry 3? well I can play this game on max but with Post FX on low with 40-60 FPS no problem. so I guess it's good.
